i know it stand for dots per inch, but how does it affect in-game sensitivity? How does it differ from the sensitivity settings in-game? (in my case, Team Fortress 2) Thanks!
It is the amount of scans per inch on a mouse. A lower DPI will be slower and less smooth, a medium one will be smooth, and a very high one will be responsive but can get jerky.

however, it can also apply to monitors - literal dots per inch, a combination of resolution and screen size. The higher DPI the more realistic, and generally the higher the better, within some limitations. (After a certain point, increasing resolution on a screen of X size at Y distance doesn't give any benefit.)
