I recently asked this question :http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2615659/fix-internal-hardrive.html

somehow broke the plastic bit on the power connection on my harddrive, idiot. Anyway, I think the harddrive is still getting power as I can feel the discs moving inside, but I'm unable to find it in the BIOS, so I'm unable to boot from it.

I've tried a USB SATA connection from the harddrive but nothing happens : I presume that doesn't even give enough power to it; however the main power cable does :/

I have no idea what to do, the data recovery in seagate want over £400 to get my data back :( surely there's an easier way.

I've read up about changing the circuit board but ive seen (on videos) hard drives made on the same day, change their circuit boards and they won't run at all.

Any ideas ? So much data I stupidly haven't backed up :(( I will learn. Any help is appreciated :) thanks

So you have a sata power & sata data connector on the harddrive, and you say you broke the plastic on it? Do you mean the plastic housing around the connector or the connector itself? Or are these not the parts that are damaged at all? Can you take a picture of how it's broken?

I notice there is an outfit that will sell you the drive circuit board, for ~usd$60, sure, it's not guaranteed to fix you, but that's better than £400. An acceptable risk if you need the data. I would look for another board with the same BIOS version.

Ive found a site that does this too but i dont think its the board that needs changing :/ it's the plastic bit that's snapped. I can feel the hardrive spinning so I don't know why it's not booting from it. see pictures in the link provided. Thanks for the input

I chose your answer as solved and can't undo it as I'm on my mobile :/ don't know how to. The link I provided in my question shows you the relevant pictures of my harddrive. Its the plastic bit that the pins sit into that have snapped off :(

I see it, hadn't checked your other thread sorry!

I've not seen that before, the problem obviously is that the pins are no longer forced into contacts. You can even see some of them have bent.
Well there's little to be done with the original HDD link there, you could I suppose get a strong pair of needlenose pliers and try to straighten/flatten the pins, remove that bit that's stuck in the sata port, and carefully reseat it, though I'm not sure what you should do to keep it to the drive... maybe a ceramic? Anyways, if you're careful about it, maybe the connection is repairable, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Maybe the easiest thing to do would be to use wires/breadboard to manually connect all of the pins with their contacts, so that you can at least power the device long enough to recover data, but I've never tried anything like that so it's possibly bad advice.

I would mostly consider what others are saying; try to buy the same model drive if it is at all available, and swap the parts.

If you were to take off the board from the drive(need one of those small star screwdrivers, sets cost maybe $15) you'll see that the connectors for sata data and power are(most likely) soldered onto the board, along the contacts and also possibly on the edges. Someone skilled at soldering may be able to redo these connections, though it would take a careful hand as a mistake could connect two power lines together which is very probably a bad thing. So either with a same size replacement connector from another hdd board, or by replacing the entire board with a like model, you may be able to get the drive operable for far less than what the data recovery firm is asking you for.

Unfortunately, the cheapest method(repairing the connector itself) is also unlikely to work, but it's something you're maybe able to try right now, assuming you haven't tried already. Sorry I can't offer a 100% resolution, it's pretty much do what you can to maybe fix it, and hope you don't fry the drive while you're at it... but there's nothing extraordinarily complicated about the break or a fix, either.

Hey man, cheers for the reply. Ive ended up taking the PCB off the harddrive and sending it to www.hdd-parts.com with my original PCB so they can swap the BIOS over. Costing around $50 to fix but if it fixes it, theoretically saves me over $600 as Seagate wanted that for data recovery :))

Ill let you know what happens. Again, thanks for the input :)

Your best bet is just to De solder the entire old connector, Buy yourself a new board so you can De solder the connector from it. Take the De soldered connector from the new board and solder it on to the old board.
To do the De soldering you need a heat gun with a nozzle that is wider than a pencil. You also need a flux rework pen, a tube of solder paste, isopropyl alcohol along with Kim Wipes and a small brush.
Just apply the flux rework pen to all of the pins of the sata connector on your old pcb. Turn on your heat gun and after a short while maybe 30 - 60 seconds you will be able to gently tap off the old pcb the broken sata connector
Do the same with your new pcb. Make sure to wipe the pads of the old pcb with isopropyl alcohol. Just put a Kim Wipe over the pads and use the brush to spread the isopropyl alcohol.
Then carefully attach the good sata connector to your old pcb, put solder paste on all of the pins and use your heat gun to solder the
connector to the old pcb. After soldering wipe clean with a Kim Wipe and isopropyl alcohol. The actual soldering should not take morethan 30-60 seconds.
If you have any questions please drop me a line.

cheers for the input :)) I ended up sending the PCB away so they could put the BIOS chip on a new board, it got delivered this morning so I'm going to test it soon :) Hope it goes well, thanks again for the help. I am guessing they did what you said to do ? :)
