Should my friend upgrade his CPU?

Hi all,

Friend asked me to help out with his new build - he's on a pretty tight budget, so he's not going all the bells and whistles maybe 200-250 quid to spend on mobo and CPU together.

His current rig is:

Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D2V
Intel i5 3470
HD 7970
8GB of RAM.

Does he need to upgrade his CPU? I ask because I have a spare 7970 I would let him have for Crossfire, but his current mobo doesn't support it. ATM I'm unsure whether to tell him to just get Mobo supporting Crossfire, or if he should replace his CPU too.

Any help would be really great,

Cheers.

A 5th gen i5 will give him only a very small performance gain, not even remotely worth the $200 price tag. Just get a good z77 or h77 board, look for one that supports SLI. I know he is looking for crossfire but SLI requires at least 8x on the second PCI-E lane so he will have more bandwidth for his second card vs the 4 lane minimum requirement for crossfire
