3x4gb ram, will it work?

Hello. I have 2x 4gb corsair vengeance low profile sticks (1600mhz ddr3)
My mobo is asus tuf z87 gryphon. I wanna get a new one (another vengeance lp 1600 mhz ddr3 stick)

I realise buying another pair would be better but I just want to know if what I want is doable (or worth doing) I don't need more than 12gb of ram anyway.

if your only gaming you only need 8, and no i don't think it would work. just stick with 8gb or get 16gb dual channel

First what OS are you using? Second, it is possible to run it like that though for compatibility reasons It is better to fill each channel with the same amount of memory.

Never a good idea to try and mix DRAM, there's no guarantee they will even play together, and if the do it may be at a reduced data rate

It's win8.1, and I am gaming. I'm just asking if 12gb of ram works with 3x4gb sticks (same sticks, i have 2 of them right now just planning to get a third one) and if it does and it just doesn't work as good, how bad is the performance drop?

If they play together it should fine, the DRAM will be in Flex mode (effetively 8GB will run in dual channel and the odd 4 in single) so there should be no performance degradation unless the BIOS reduces the data rate
