Installed new ram stick, motherboard recognizes all ram, windows 7 will not boot. When trying to start with windows 7 disc, I get a error saying that \windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt status: 0xc0000098

The RAM i installed is a different brand but same clock and stats as the old stick.

I cannot boot to any recovery mode from the windows disc. Please help, all of my searching yielded no solutions.

Motherboard is a MSI 760GM-P23.

Do you have a second computer or have access to one ??? If you have try this FIX

Combining ram sticks always come with the risk of screwing up your computer. Does it boot with only the previous ram stick only??
If not then try resetting the CMOS jumpers.
2. Unplug everything, wait a few hours and then put everything back together and try to boot with only the original ram stick.

I managed to get it to the windows install screen, completely wiping and reinstalling windows now on original ram. Will attempt to reinstall new RAM after windows is reinstalled to verify bad stick. We'll see what happens.

I did a CMOS reset and that didn't help the issue unfortunately. All the RAM registered fine in the motherboard startup tests... Makes me mad.

Will report back asap.

No, got the windows reinstall all done, tried both sticks and only the old one works. The old stick is a Pacific Sun Memory 4GB pc3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 stick, and the new one is a PNY 4GB PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 stick. I had to completely format and repartition my HDD but i can recover files, no real harm done. I'm sending my purchase back and will try a replacement, if that doesn't work, I'll just get a refund.

Another brief concern is that the system only boots (with only the old stick of RAM) when the fail-safe presets are loaded in BIOS, if I choose the optimised setup it doesn't load windows, not crucial, but any ideas why?

If you have a spare HDD lying around try to setup windows in that one with the new ram. See if it works. Have you been using the system for a long time?? Simply put the optimized setup used various sets of non-standard(non failsafe) values and any one (or more) of them are not working anymore. Further trouble shooting needs to be done to identify and then fix the source of the problem. Unless you are overclocking, let the fail safe values be.

Yup. I'm letting the fail-safe values alone, no overclocking for me! I tested the new stick many ways, I couldn't even get the Windows install disk to boot into safe mode with it in. I am returning the stick tomorrow, hopefully the replacement will not be a dud. Inter-company sticks don't usually have compatibility issues, do they?

Unfortunately they do. It is best to get at least same capacity sticks from the same company. However, sometimes even different sticks of the same brand and production batch refuse to boot for no reason at all. Hopefully you'll have better luck next time.

That's too bad, I thought for sure I'd be in the clear. Oh well, like I said, I have a replacement coming soon and will try with that, but if it doesn't work, I'll just save up and get a fresh pair of 4GB sticks from somewhere. Thank you for your advice though, you've been a great help!
