The RIGHT i3, CAN work ok with a high enough end GPU to have a good experience. They have some strengths and weaknesses. Models with a fast enough base clock have fared well against FX in SOME areas. Even against the i5 in SOME areas. That I can agree with. But to flatly say that an i3 would outperform FX 8 across the board is not accurate and in consideration of budgets, is NOT always clear regarding what to choose. Sorry DC, had to pick on you there.

Lower end i3's don't do well at all against the i5 or FX 8, but some of the higher end models do, but the're so expensive that you're often better off just adding a few more bucks to the pot and getting an i5 or FX 8 core and giving it a nice overclock. My 8320 at 4.5Ghz paired with a...

An 8350/70 will not bottleneck any games, even on ultra, if set up properly.

An i3, on the other hand, will struggle on high intensity pc games, such as arma or dcs.

You will need to change some settings in bios and ensure games that can are running multiple threads. Otherwise, you could pay more for an intel that doesn't need any settings changes and gets you 2 fps better in the most intense games.

My 8320 at 4.5Ghz paired with a 290x doesn't struggle at all and I rarely encounter ANY issues that I suspect are CPU related. There are a few titles that don't like it much but overall it does well.

If you're even "thinking" about an i7, that means budget isn't much of an issue and I'd really recommend going with either a 4690k or Xeon E3 1231v3 if gaming is to be your main focus and you don't feel you need an i7. With the same single core performance as a similarly clocked i7 and the same 8 threads, but priced similar to the i5 since it can't be overclocked and has no integrated graphics, it makes a good halfway point choice between the i5 and i7.

I see low end i3's (there aren't really high end i3's anyway) coming slightly ahead of the fx 8350 at stock in the majority (~60%) of games. Not in benchmarks like 3dmark, obviously, but paired with a dGPU in non optimized games they usually perform better.

This is not to say I would recommend i3's for gaming pc's. Rather than saving $30 on the cpu, better save those on the motherboard and get an i5. Or just wait for the next salary. It was solely meant to show the huge dispancy between an i7 (/i5) and the fx series.

Sadly it's rather hard to find reviews that compare the i3 line with fx's in dedicated gaming. It really isn't eithers primarily targeted workload, so that's understandable.

Actually, it's not that hard. It's just that there aren't many i3 models worth comparing and the ones that are aren't the hundred dollar variety, or at least that's what I was going to say, until I took another look at the 4360 and 4370, which last time I looked were about forty bucks more than they are right now. At 136.00 the i3-4360 is, in my opinion, a viable alternative to any of the FX chips for gaming only purposes. New perspective it seems. Here's the benchmarks I was talking about and the i3 is pretty clearly a better choice considering it's much lower power consumption, heat output and the fact that it actually does extremely well against both the i5 and the FX chip. It even beats the FX in some non-gaming benchmarks if you look through the whole article.
