So I have an old Asus notebook that doesn't turn on anymore, however it has come to my attention that the HDD seems to be working just fine since I tried it in another laptop and it boots right away. I got a new Lenovo notebook about a few months ago but this time I'm using ElementaryOS to boot. I was thinking in buying one of those external enclosure disk cases to be able to still use that other HDD and I've been reading a lot on how to make it bootable from USB and every single tutorial is telling how to partition it to install the new OS, but I just want to know if having that already running Win 8.1 if I plug it to the USB port and set it as the primary boot in the BIOS will it work automatically or should I go through all the partiontion thing and reinstall everything again? On the other hand, let's asume it does work automatically, what would happen if I have it unplugged? will the HDD of the notebook boot with eOS as it used to? thanks!

If that HD already contains a bootable 8.1, it should keep booting somewhere else BUT and this is a huge but, your Win8.1 already has a list of hardware it want to initialize and if your new machine doesn't have the same hardware components, guess what is gonna happen? Boot... crash.

PC BIOS has a list of boot sequences, so let say you tell it to boot from USB first, and if that doesn't work (contains no boot or unknown boot signature) then it goes to the next device on the list, BUT (again) it will boot USB W8 even though the drivers are wrong and it eventually crashes on you.

Ok so yes, you're right on the hardware drivers. I didn't know this when I tried it on a different notebook and when it booted it didn't go straight to windows, it tried to configure everything first to then let me sign in to my account. I guess it'll do the same but just for safety I'll try to to a fresh install on this new machine just in case.
On the other hand, I understand by this that if the win8 ext HDD is not connected, it'll go to the next bootable thing, which is my int linux HDD but will try to boot with win8? I didn't know BIOS does that. So I guess there's no way to be able to just carry an ext drive and boot it whenever I want right?

Well, miracles do happen (or so they tell me) and if perchance you install that HDD in a USB enclosure and it does boot while it's connected to some PC, you can consider that a small miracle.

Assuming the HDD is non-defective you can likely use it as a USB secondary (non-bootable) drive.
