Hello!!! I'm upgrading my PC with new components and was hoping you guys
could take a quick look and let me know if anything seams off or if you have any
recommendations. All help is greatly appreciated!

I plan to use the computer for gaming and video editing / converting.

The new components are...

ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 (MB)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132125

G.SKILL Trident X Series 32gb total 2*(2x8gb) (RAM)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231589

Intel Core i7-4790K (CPU)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117369

MSI GTX 970 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 (Video Card)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127832

Phanteks PH-TC14CS_BL (Heatsink)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835709014

Also I checked online and found with the fins taken off the ram, the height is
39mm so I believe the Heatsink should clear. The reason I chose this heatsink
is the tower im using has a huge 230mm fan on the side... my old cpu heatsink
was to large and i never got to use the side fan.

Old PC remaining parts up to 3 1/2 years old

AZZA Solano 1000 (Computer Case)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517004&cm_re=azza-_-11-517-004-_-Product

Some Sata Hard drives and a optical drive

COOLERMASTER SILENT PRO GOLD1200W POWER SUPPLY
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171055

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Assuming all the parts I've chosen work well together... I'm concerned if the ram
and heatsink will fit properly which from my own research I believe it will.
I'm also planing to put in a M.2 when I get some more money and was
wondering is M.2 SSD a good boot drive option? I don't know much about Sata
Express but from what i've seen online PCI Express / M.2 SSD was best.
I have some computer knowledge but mostly I aim for the high review products
on sites like newegg and ill read several reviews before making a decision. If
you see anything that could be improved by changing some components please
mention it. I have limited funds thou so if its not near the original price I won't be
able to get it.
What I hope to find from this is a the obvious, a stable computer with great
performance and also turning games up to ultra is important too :D
Thanks for your time and I'm excited to see a response!
I seriously doubt that CPU will do well with 32GB of 2400mhz memory using 1.65v. I would find a module with a lower voltage. DDR3 2133 modules will give you just as good of performance and unless you're running some kind of virtual machine configuration or simultaneously running some extremely high end CAD or professional applications that specifically call for it, there's really not much reason to run more than 16GB of RAM. Video and audio workstation editing aren't likely to need it and gaming won't benefit from it so it's kind of a waste of your investment. I'd stick with 16GB of 2133mhz RAM at no more than 1.6v.
These would be perfectly fine:
If you want to run 32GB of RAM I'd suggest sticking to DDR3 1600mhz 1.5v modules.
My Budget is roughly 1,700 to 2,000 but less spent to get a good build the better. Overclocking i'd like to do so long as its very safe, maybe 70%-80% of max.
Would you recommend 2133mhz RAM even with overclocking the CPU?
I just finished entering my info onto http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/z2nhJx and the ram you suggested has flagged a warning I was hoping you could check.
Feel free to change parts around. My goal is a fast computer that works well for gaming and stuff like running handbrake video convertions on the
side... both if possible lol. Also room to upgrade in the future is great too.
Also removing the 4x RAM and adding 2x 2133 RAM lowered my price so more wiggle room!
I changed to some <1.575v memory:
And gave you a second option on the motherboard - $80 cheaper but still very good quality. I also saw a Z87-A for $120, a further $40 cheaper again! But it's not 100% guaranteed to work with your 4790k out of the box and may need a bios update first...
I'm liking what i see tyvm! That motherboard has a Thunderbolt Port (I use Drobo 5D)!!
I love that website!! Thank-you for showing it to me!
So based on that list what are my capabilities? Is it more then enough for what I'm wanting it for? I'm very happy with that price but I don't want to regret
not spending more later. I guess a better angle to look at it would be....
Looking at that list what would you say is the 1 or 2 most likely bottle necks if i ran into problems or wanted to improve in the future
(Ignoring the hard drives of course lol)
Also what is the best boot drive? M.2 SSD? Sata SSD? Originally I was going after a motherboard with M.2 option. I do plan to take advantage of the SSD with Video Transcoding.
You won't really see any performance difference between the two boards, and you can compare their features here: http://www.asus.com/us/site/motherboards/Z97/comparison/
M.2 supports up to 10gb/s while sata is 6gb/s so m.2 is preferred I think? although the real world difference would be minimal
I think your most likely bottleneck will be in a few years when you need to upgrade the graphics card again, but this is fairly normal and your proposed build right now is a monster
Really this is a monster? I figured id need to spend a lot more for that lol.
@badboyrog2
The Cpu Cooler you chose is a lot larger and stands up so I wouldn't be able to use the large 230mm Side Case Fan that comes with the Azza. I was hoping to get a good CPU Cooler that is alone very effective in keeping my CPU cooled but also not in the way of the 230mm case fan.
I do love your choice on video card but after using the compare feature on Newegg I noticed DVI Slots and i realized i need to make sure i have the right ones lol. I'm currently using 3x Acer GD235HZ Monitor setup and i was fully prepared to downgrade to a 2 monitor setup. I plan to buy a LED monitor soon to use as my main display.
Also I found a tiny step up from the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 04G-P4-2974-KR Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card you linked
This one
EVGA 04G-P4-3975-KR GeForce GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0+ 4GB 256-Bit
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487088
I'm thinking about this video card because it allows me to continue with the 3 monitor setup i've been using but i'm wondering is that a good idea with this video card or would there be problems or would I be disappointed later on. (i'm not planning to SLI if i can help it)
So I guess the plan would be to continue to use 2x Acer GD235HZ Monitors using the HDMI port and Dual DVI. When I get the new LED monitor it will use one of the Display Ports.
Is there any LED Monitors you guys would recommend with this build? Something that looks beautiful for gaming has low MS, Ghosting and no screen tearing?
I could never fix the screen tearing problem I was having with my old system, 2x GTX 590 Cards in SLI powering 3 monitors, lots of tearing.
its up to you but the new haswell refresh cpu produces less heat then before even the I7 4790K , just remove the side case fan ...so any cpu cooler lower then 165mm heigth will fit
my gpu card i choosed is good for 4 display monitors
Max Analog : 2048x1536
Max Digital : 4096x2160
Interface
PCI-E 3.0 16x
DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI, DisplayPort
Actually haven't ignored it at all, if you look at the very next post when you asked about overclocking not only did I say yes id like to overclock (only if very safe cause little experience) but I added all my parts to the ram you suggested. Pcpartspicker flagged that RAM as having problems with Intel Core i7-4790K CPU, a different 2133 mhz RAM fixed the problem. Unless i'm missing something else, maybe a personal message? I only joined Tomshardware since yesterday so still new to this site. I apologize if I missed something you said.
Less RAM and lower mhz cause I don't need it was exactly the kind of info I was looking for and found it to be very helpful.
Whoops sorry, I didn't see that the first time, when I looked at that video card it was with 3 others in compare mode and I missed it.
So if i was to narrow it down to these two Video cards, would you still say to go with the superclocked? The other one shows slightly higher numbers for only 10 bucks more
EVGA GTX 970 Superclocked 04G-P4-2974-KR
or
EVGA GTX 970 04G-P4-3975-KR
Also with the CPU Cooler, the one i'm currently using is very similar to the Raijintek Themis. I'm worried about the dimensions because the one I have is almost touching the side panel. The side panel slightly dips in where you attach the 230mm fan.
My current CPU Cooler is Cooler Master V6 GT
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103089
Those dimensions are 131 x 120 x 165 mm. I'm not sure which of those describes the height from the board, if its the 165mm then im safe. The Raijintek says its 157mm.
My latest build on PCPartPicker is "http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/BbdT99"
I'm waiting to hear back from badboyrog2 on the Videocard but i'll probably go with the Superclocked.
I'm also looking for a nice LED Monitor to add, something that looks beautiful for gaming, fast response time for twitch games like first person shooters and minimal ghosting so the obvious stuff. Ideally i don't want to go to expensive but closer to 30in is preferred.
So maybe if we could find two options? at 24" and one close to 30"? and if i can afford the larger one id get that.
Although it would look weird next to two 24' Acer GD235HZ
no thats perfect tyvm!!! still learning how to use the internet to search for information.... should of went to the manufacturers website lol!!! ok so 150mm, damn so close with the Raijintek
And actually, contrary to what what stated earlier in this thread, Haswell Refresh does not run cooler than previous versions like Haswell and Ivy bridge. Sandy bridge was the last version, which used solder rather than a thermal interface material under the CPU lid, that didn't have giant heat issues when overclocking. At stock clocks, yes, Haswell Refresh is ok, but as soon as you start overclocking you start bringing the heat and you want to have a very good cooler.
Personally, I don't see a need to use that side fan anyhow. With three front 140mm intakes, a 230mm top exhaust and a rear 120mm exhaust, that's plenty of airflow for any system. I'd forget about using the side location and go with a tall cooler. I would NOT go with that Cooler Master V6 either. The V6 and V8 look nice, but they do not perform up to the standards set by most other high end tall coolers.
I'd go with something like the Noctua NH-U14S or Cryorig H5, if using somewhat taller RAM, or The Noctua NH-D14/D-15 or Cryorig R1 Ultimate or Universal if not using tall RAM. If you want to use the side intake anyhow, this might be a build where liquid cooling makes sense, if you can utilize two of the front intake fan locations for the radiator.
The Cryorig H7 would be your absolute best best if you don't plan to get carried away with the overclock and will be happy with something in the 4.3-4.5 range. Honestly, if gaming is your main intent, overclocking isn't going to help anyhow as benchmarks show that overclocking the i7-4790k offers almost no improvement at all.
In any case, the H7 is only 145mm tall, is offset to one side so as not to interfere with any height of RAM and performs better than the Hyper 212 EVO which is an "ok" cooler itself. I can't find it for sale in Canada though so you might have to import it or do a bit of looking to find one.
Wow i'm liking that Gigabyte G1 Gaming video card!! It's looks awesome with 3 fans and 6 ports on the back and looks to be the best in the "970" bracket with those benchmarks
