Some guy on skype that wants to sell me the GTX 780 says there is a VRAM production error. He says if you use more then 3,5GB VRAM your performance will drop miserably, Is this true?

Not a production error, it was an intentional action by nvidia to throttle a card which was just WAY too good to be released at so much cheaper than a 980.

they had to come up with a way to "nerf" it, that is how.

On 1080p you won't run into this problem, I can assure you of this.

The guy on skype is obviously trying to sell you an older card for more cash.

When a particular game (such as Shadow of Mordor, GTA V) tries to access more than 3.5GB VRAM, the performance WILL drop.

This is because the 970 uses two different VRAM. The first 3.5GB @224GB/sec bandwidth. And the second 0.5GB @28GB/sec bandwidth.

The only issue that arises is when both the 3.5gb section and .5gb sections are used at the same time. The only time one would see this is during image/video editing. Future games that use more VRAM may also cause issues, but the card itself is not broken and still has some of the best price/performance.

According to Nvidia folks, their latest driver has more optimal memory allocation (between the 3.5GB and 0.5GB partitions) to improve performance. In other words, they're somehow sniffing what data is accessed less and sticking it into the lower bandwidth memory.
