Hey everyone -

First, I have been researching and researching for my own solution and I honestly think I have read thru 90% of the same questions/problems here on Toms and my issue is a little different OR I am providing additional information which I haven't noticed that has been added in previous questions here in the storage forums:

I will try to be as thorough as possible:

1. HP Pavilion dv7 / Win 7 Home Premium
2. Updated BIOS
3. Current on all Windows updates

I have an external drive purchased from OWC.

1. Hitachi
2. 1TB external USB 3.0, with A/C adaptor
3. 5400 RPM
4. SATA 6.0 Gb/s
5. HDD 5K1000
6. Type: TS5SAF100

I am going to explain everything that I have done already. Again, im hoping to be as thorough as possible. :)

I am trying to access my external drive - It is plugged into the AC power supply.
LED light is ON.

The drive is not being recognized by the computer but IS recognized in Device Manager and Disk Management.

I have tried all 4 USB ports on both computers. I get the same result on every USB port.

I have gotten 2 new USB 3.0 cords. Still - drive not recognized.

I have plugged in to my USB hub and of course connected the USB hub to my computer - and again, the disk IS recognized in Disk Management and Device Management, not in Computer.

It DOES have a drive letter assigned to it.

BIOS IS updated.

All Windows updates are updated. (blech)

Booting in Safe Mode, still, not showing up in Computer.

When I check the driver details, it shows last driver updated in 2006 - of course looking for new driver updates it states "I have the most current update."

I looked on Hitachis website and OWC website for Hitachi drivers, and that is a no go. I looked everywhere for a driver for it (I don't want to go through a random driver site, thats too scary, but - I can't find Hitachi drivers ANYWHERE. I can't imagine 2006 is the most current driver for this thing.)

***yes, this drive used to work. It was 1/3 full - I just haven't used it in over a year*** It was formatted before I used it and never had an issue with the drive.

Okay, so - when going into Disk Management it shows the drive. BUT it does not give me an option anywhere to wipe the drive and reformat it.

(i thought disk manager was only able to format internal drives, but I don't know this for a fact).

Under the drive details it just shows the driver letter and it states NO MEDIA.

I contact OWC and im very disappointed with their 'tech support'. In fact, I chatted twice with 2 different people and I got 2 different idiots - they kept asking the same questions after I already gave answers. They said just send it back and they'll replace it. Well, thats great. But I want to see if I can just reformat it and be done. It is pulling teeth with them - they couldn't even tell me HOW to reformat it.

I got the canned response: "send it in to be troubleshooted and well fix it or replace it or try a new cable or try a different computer"

So, I think I've covered everything.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thank you so much.

They are right to want you to send it back. The controller card for the external drive enclosure most likely died and this is why you are seeing a no media error. There is communication to the controller card but not to the hard drive inside the enclosure.

Hey there, Splork Mc Gillicuty!

I have to say you've done a really awesome job with the troubleshooting, indeed.
But I'd also suggest you to test the drive using the HDD manufacturer's diagnostics tool (you should be able to find that one on their website). If you cannot find it, here are some third-party suggestions: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
It will let us know what is the health and SMART status and if there are any bad sectors. This way we'll know what we are dealing with here.

@inzgary is right, though, getting in touch with the HDD tech support is a good idea. If the external is still covered by the warranty, you should be able to send your RMA request and be provided with a replacement.

Let me know what are the results of the diagnostics test!

wellll, HOWDEE SuperSoph_WD. ive neverrrrr been paid such hi praises from an expert before! :) I did in fact try running a dx tool, I don't recall which it was. I believe it was one I found of cNet. It was one with highest of ratings. However, even though the drive DID show up. It was not able to find, let alone scan the drive let alone find the drive.

I even plugged in into an external hub, where oddly, it showed the name of the drive, the full name of the drive in fact. Not a generic drive name.
So, yeah, it has enough connection with an external USB hub. But NOT good enough with 8 othere USB ports which are in working order, and all of my other USB peripherals work just fine.

I contacted YET AGAIN - OWC and they will be taking it back replacing the entire shebang, or just the enclosure if nothing else.

Thanks,

Kim *ahem* I mean SPLORK!
