Can't argue with that, the 280 is at an amazing price point and can handle most things at high anyways.

There is a 650W version of the XFX psu for about $15 more so that can be a good choice.

I'd be a little worried on how a 550 watt will power a 290 over the years as the wattage decreases. Also, I'd just do a 280/x since he will be playing rts.
