Issues with lg wh14ns40 blu-ray burner in Windows 7

I recently bought the LG wh14ns40 drive for my (aged) computer. At first it wouldn't recognize any discs (blu-ray, dvd, cd) that I inserted, but after updating the firmware it started recognizing discs..it'll take a long time to do so, though. I'm doubtful that my system can play blu-rays currently (Have an Ati 2600 Pro HD video card with vga>dvi adapter), but the dvds and cds should work fine (I plan on upgrading my video card soon). I have ripped a cd, which, before I left, said 130+ minutes remaining. The ripped songs had chunks missing thoughout them. I haven't tried ripping music under Linux, but I was able to play a dvd (the same dvd would not play under Windows 7).

I currently have the CCCP codec pack and am using Media Player Classic Home Cinema. I tried K-lite codec pack, but it changed nothing. WMP gives me the error: "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card." MPC-HC gives me "DVD: Copy-protection Fail." Unfortunately I can't upgrade my graphic card drivers, because it's no longer supported, which again is the ATI 2600 Pro HD. Also, i've updated Windows DRM to the latest version and also also the drive itself didn't come with drivers, it was oem. The driver it's using is from 2006.

I don't know why the drive works seemingly fine under Linux, but not Windows 7. Sorry if my wording/sentence structure is confusing. I tend to have a roundabout way of explaining things. Also, any spelling mistakes are completely intentional.

First, thanks for the reply.

And sorry, I forgot to mention I did try VLC ending with the same results.

My (dated) specs are:
Mobo: Biostar TF7025-M2 (http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=183) Latest bios is installed.
3 gigs of ram
2 sata hdds
Ati Hd 2600 pro (pci-e) (Latest drivers installed)
Athlon 64 FX-62 dual core cpu
One optical drive, which is the LG wh14ns40 (This is plugged into the first sata port, which I thought may have been a solution. It didn't work. Also have the latest firmware.)
I use Media Player Class Home Cinema as my movie player. I did use VLC, but got tired of having to adjust the equalizer levels for every video i'd want to play.

I'm running an up-to-date Windows 7 64bit on one drive, while on another drive I have a slightly dated install of Archbang Linux 64bit.

I did have a previous cd/dvd drive (ide) before buying the current drive. It ripped cds fine. Had some trouble playing some dvds, but I think that was mostly due to it being old, maybe 8 or 9 years.

Try connecting the drive to a different SATA header, preferably of a different color if possible, on the motherboard, or try using a different SATA cable. Either of those things, being connected to a poorly working secondary storage controller or having a bad cable, could certainly cause your issue.

Less likely but still possible is the fact that it could just be a bad drive. I'd certainly think another reason would be far more likely than that though. I rarely see new optical drives with issues, but it does happen.

I tried again in Linux and the drive seems to work completely normally. Tested two dvds and they worked. Ripped a cd and so far all songs are normal with no skipping/gaps. I think that the drive is fine and that something in Windows is the problem. Testing same dvds again in Windows and currently 1st dvd isn't recognized as being in the drive yet (about 2 minutes). I could just use Linux I know, but some programs just run better in Windows.

I'll try switching the sata cables around again. I haven't tried a different sata cable yet, so i'll give that a go. Although i'm no expert, i'm inclined to think this is a software issue with Windows rather than any hardware issue.

Still no change, even after rebooting. I'm thinking of just sending the drive back and getting a dvd/cd burner/player, but i'll do that Monday.

I dunno, if it works fine in Linux, it should work in Windows, provided something isn't fubared in the system. Have you tried running an SFC/Scannow to see if there is a file system issues that's messing with it?

Do you have any virtual drives configured in windows? Virtual drives often screw things up with optical hardware.

As far as your system being capable of using the drive, any system from Vista on should be capable of using a Blu-ray drive without issue.

I did have a virtual drive, but uninstalled the software to check if it was the problem. Didn't notice a change.

I ran scannow as well chkdsk with no changes after a reboot. Ripped a song from another cd and the results are the same from another cd. Took about 3 or 4 minutes to rip a 3 minute song and it had gaps/missing sound.

I'm running out of ideas of what the problem could be (and thanks for your ideas as well).

I've seen virtual drives leave crap behind before, that created issues with other hardware. Just to be sure, go into Windows explorer, device manager and disk management and make sure there are no remaining listings for any virtual drives. Also make sure in device manager that there are no remarked devices.

Not seeing anything. Just the current drive. Same with disk management. I did just think of something though. I have some services disabled. I'm not sure what the funtion is of some of the disabled services, but I can give a list:

-Adaptive Brightness
-AMD External Events Utility
-ASP.NET State Service
-BranchCache
-Certificate Propagation
-Distributed Link Tracking Client
-Encrypted File System (EFS)
-Fax
-Function Discovery Resource Publication
-Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
-IP Helper
-Media Center Extender Service
-Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service
-Net.Msmq Listener Adaptor
-Net.Pipe Listener Adaptor
-Net.TCP Listener Adaptor
-Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service
-Netlogon
-Network Access Protection Agent
-Offline Files
-Remote Regristry
-Routing and Remote Access
-Security Center
-Server
-SNMP Trap
-Tablet PC Input Service
-Windows Biometric Service
-Windows Defender
-Windows Firewall
-Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
-Workstation

The only two I see that could even be remotely related are I think the AMD external events utility, if you have a system with an AMD chipset motherboard, or possibly the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service, which is generally only active when external SCSI devices are used, but does have some relation to storage controllers.

What program are you using to rip media and have you tried any other applications or only the one?

Enabled both services with no change.

For Windows I use CDex and on Linux I use K3B. Not sure if i've tried a different one on Windows 7 yet.

I actually didn't try burning any cds/dvds, just ripping songs from cds to my pc.

Although i'd like to have known what the problem was, the drive is on it's way back to Amazon.
