Just applied Thermal paste to the CPU, did I mess up?

Basically I put on the thermal paste, horribly, trying to do something like this https://a.disquscdn.com/uploads/mediaembed/images/1209/1071/original.jpg

I put the heatsink down on it and screwed it in a ways before I realized I needed to still install my ram. I had to unscrew the sink put the ram in and rescrew it back on. I looked at the paste on the CPU and it looked dried and cracked.

Did I screw up or will it be fine?

Apply new paste. If you take the heatsink off you should reapply in order to ensure no air bubbles get trapped when reinstalling.

You could also scavenge the leftover and re-use it since it hasn't been heated up and used yet.

And there's no way it's gonna look dried and cracked unless it's been on there for awhile. If this is an older system and not a newly built system, did you make sure to clean off the old paste?

You have to clean it with rubbing alcohol to get a clean surface. Using only a tissue isn't enough.

I redid the paste. Is there anyway to see if you did a good job? I ended up just globbing it all over.

all you want is a thin layer. Clean it all off and restart because it will become a problem and cause some bad temps

All you need is a dot in the center of the chip the size of a pea.

As you install the heatsink the pressure will evenly spread the paste.

The only way to find out if you did a good job is to start the computer and monitor the temps.

the pea method is pry the best route...great results and pretty hard to mess up

I got it installed and am going to run with it and see how the temps are before bothering to unscrew and doing it over again. All the major components are in place, just have to do the wiring now.
