Hi all. I've been trying to overclock my old athlon ii x4 620 so that I could get the most out of it until I upgrade. So to overclock this processor I have to use the FSB as it is not unlocked. I'm currently running at an FSB of 240 giving me ~3.1Ghz at stock voltage

Anyway I've got the NB multiplier at x9 instead of the default 10 and it seems to bee fine at 2120 mhz (ill put this down once I get the fsb higher). However my HT link speed tops out at 2000mhz in the bios. But when I load up my PC it displays as 2400mhz. Is there anything wrong with my CPU/motherboard. I want to push it further but don't want to fry anything. Oh and my PCI-e frequency is set at 149mhz to stop my r9 290x from freezing my pc.

Thank you.

If its needed:
mobo: GA-MA785GM-us2h
ram: 8gb ddr2 @800mhz
gpu: r9 290x
PSU: cooler master gx 750w

Solution
I've recently overclocked my Athlon x4 630 without trouble. You need to keep the HT Link as close to 2000mhz as you can, try dropping it in the bios to about 1800 and see what it comes up as in CPU-z.

Its fine to keep the NB frequency higher, this will improve performance.

Are you doing stress tests and monitoring your temps?

Yeah my temps are fine. They won't go above 45 when I'm gaming etc.
You say to try and put it to 1800mhz in the bios but when I do this it still stays at 2400mhz and if I put it at 1600mhz I get blue screens.

I've run prime95 while I slept with no errors. One thing I have noticed now though is that Far Cry 3 cannot open, even though it could open when I had it at 2.9ghz.

Hmm we're at a bit of a wall unfortunately. Dropping the HT link to 1800 should reduce it to around 2000Mhz with the FSB overclocked. Are you checking the HT frequency in CPU-Z? The only other thing I can think of is that another clock setting is set to 'auto' in the BIOS and that is overriding your HT settings.

Also don't forget to turn off Turbo and C1E for your CPU, it keeps the overclock more stable.

Yeah I've turned of C1E and cool and quiet. I don't believe my CPU can turbo. I think with the HT link where it says 2.0ghz, 1.8ghz, 1.6ghz and so on is just the multiplier but not shown as that. Looking in overdrive where i view my northbridge and ht link speeds it has a multiplier rather than fixed values.

One thing I have noticed is that my NB speed fluctuates every time I turn on my PC. It goes anywhere from 2200mhz to 2500ghz without changing any BIOS settings. I'm not sure why this is happening. I'm going to try for a higher overclock but my HT link refuses to stay at the x8/1.6ghz multiplier,

I've got my CPU at 3.18ghz at the moment. It survived a 4 hour prime95 blend test so it should be okay. One thing I have noticed is that if I bring my computer up from hibernate and try to play killing floor 2 it bluescreens but not from a full start up.
