Does an old HDD affect performance of a newly built pc?

Hello there. A year ago, I just built a new computer with all the parts brand new except the HDD. The HDD is more or less like 5 years old already and all the parts are new. These are the specifications:

Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Gene
Processor: Intel Core i5 4670
Graphics Card: none
Memory: G.Skill RipjawsX 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3
Storage: WD Blue 320GB ((old part))
Power Supply: Corsair CX600M

My problem is, since I bulit this computer, I wasn't contented of it's speed, and it's not what I was expecting. I have even done several reformats already, and I wonder why it's still very slow for a computer with an i5 in it. And now, it had blue screens twice. First, it restarted and said it's because of over temperature, then second, it just restarted and became back to normal. Do you think it's because of my old HDD or it's something else? Thanks in advance.:D

Reformatting a HD doesn't speed it up, and hardware is only warrantied for 3 Years before the manufacturer says your on your own. That said, your not very specific on how your measuring the performance.

Now you did note you had a overheat issue, you should invest in AfterMarket coolers /not/ the one that came with it. alot of your issues could be just heat.
Simply run SPECCY to look at your specs and it will show your idle heat when doing nothing. You can copy and paste it here, but any quick search witll tell you how bad your heat issue is. if you get MSI Afterburner and enable the OSD function, then set the different settings to monitor to OSD as well, you can see in Game, CAD, etc. 3D application what your performances levels are. This is a excellent way to monitor and measure true performance rather then 'how you feel' about it. if you see (for example) CPU at 80% usage when gaming but nothing is really happening in the game (quiet scene) then your bottlenecking in your CPU, if you see your temps high, then your melting your hardware, etc.

So do you think if I replace the oem with an aftermarket cooler, it could speed up and it could also stop lagging? And do you think I should replace my HDD with a new one/SSD? I've downloaded and installed Speccy but I don't know what I have to check in it. Sorry for my questions.:)

Not much at gaming and such. But may lag when watching videos or loading may take longer. also booting and internet browsing may not be so fast. So basically once something loads it doesnt lag but if it is something that s using disk should be affected. If the hard disk is just old but not used it must not affect much but if it is used- reformatted to be used then it may be more problem. Anyway, its not a big problem.

Hmmm... Well honestly those are very broad measurements and quite subjugative. Most time people state what you just did were not doing weekly / monthly maintenance of their PCs and have some sort of malware or such other on there.

I would suggest doing these basics at this time, and line for line provide what happened. Then maybe we can address what else (maybe hardware) may be at fault?

Did you install all Windows Updates? Including OPTIONAL except BING? Check them and repeat till ALL are installed.

Download and run Slim Drivers, install all the latest updates but you don't need to reboot until you do the last update

Go to www.filehippo.com, download Malwarebytes, go to CUSTOM Scan and set it to do a full system scan (by DEFAULT IT DOESN"T DO THAT, and AntiVirus doesn't pick up alot of malware) - this resolved almost ALL other similiar posts to date as most had Malware the AV didn't pick up.

Remove whatever AV your using and download AVIRA, AVG, Comodo or Panda go to CUSTOM Scan and set it to do a full system scan (by DEFAULT IT DOESN"T DO THAT) - this repeatedly has resolved alot of people issue relying on MS Essentials.

Repeat the AV/Malware scans till the system comes up clean.

Download AUTORUNS and turn off anything NOT critical on startup, so you don't need to run JAVAScheduler to check for Java updates everytime you start your computer for example. BE CAREFUL AND KNOW WHAT YOUR TURNING OFF BEFORE YOU DO IT.

Download and run SPECCY, copy and paste the first tab to show your idle temps

Open Computer, Can Air dust out the bunnies and use paint brush on the vents, coolers, fans, etc.
