I have 2 Radeon HD AMD 7970's Gigabyte version already cross-fired. I found a Radeon HD 6850 while cleaning my basement. Can I crossfire this one to the existing cards that are already in my system. In other words is it compatible with the other cards and if so should I?

No, I am almost sure the cards have to at least use the same core and those do not.
One of the few cross generations that officially supports crossfire is the 5770 and 6770 because they are actually the same core.
