Hey all,

I am building a new PC for my family. We are still using an 8 year old XPS. All I updated over the years were adding 1 GB of RAM to make it 2 GB (about 6 years ago) and added a dedicated Video card about 5 years ago. It has come to the end of its useful life. My plan is to build a new one for around $1,000 and it will have to last us for years to come, perhaps even 8 more years.

The PC will be used for gaming, homework and many other family tasks. No Video editing. My son like playing LOL and other games of that sort. I like playing FPS and RTS games. It needs to be able to handle all those tasks but must not be a racing machine. I do want to look a head a little so it will last for years to come.

Are you buying a monitor: Yes
Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: any
Location: Salt Lake City
Overclocking: Not needed
SLI or Crossfire: No
Your Monitor Resolution: 1080p (27 inches)
HD: really want SSD, does not have to be too big as long as I can add a second one in a few years when it is cheaper

Here is what I have been working on:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690 Processor (6M Cache, 3.90 GHz) ($224 at amazon)
CPU Cooler: The one that comes with the i5
Motherboard: ASRock H97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($84 at amazon)
Memory: Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3/DDR3L-1600 MHz ($105 at amazon)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD ($98 at amazon)
Video Card: XFX Double D R9-280A-TDFD Radeon R9 280 3GB ($170 at newegg)
Case: NZXT Source 210 Window ATX Mid Tower Case ($40 at amazon)
Power Supply: XFX 650W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($65 at tigerdirect)
Drive: Asus Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X ($40 at amazon)
WiFi: TP-Link TL-WN881ND 802.11b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter ($20 at amazon)
OS: Windows 7 ($90)
Monitor: Acer G276HL Gbd 27-Inch (1920 x 1080) Widescreen Monitor ($150 at amazon)

Total: $1,086

My question is two fold. From what I can tell these parts are all compatible. Do you guys see any issues and would you recommend any changes to what I got?

Thank you so much!

Swap that 16 gigs of ram with 8 gigs and throw in some CM 212 Evo for quieter operation.

Oh, and you better see how 1080p@27in looks in real life. You might not like the size of the pixels (I personally don't). 24in is the sweetest spot for that resolution.

Thank you for reaching out.
Why do you recommend going for less RAM, is this just to save like $40?

You would replace the standard fan with this Evo because of noise? Is the one that comes with the i5 loud?

Thank you for all you tips!

You'll do no video editing, so no need for that amount of RAM. 8GB will be enough for games.
From my experience, running Chrome with 20+ tabs, Visual Studio with 100+ projects solution, app that our team develops (half a gig after lauch, eats more with more 3D objects loaded), Microsoft Test Manager, Sublime Text with 5-10 tabs, foobar2000 w/ FLAC library playing music, Skype and half a dozen less important programs simultaneously – RAM usage never exceeds 7GB. I've seen it climb to 9GB only once – when I was troubleshooting some bug an had 3 instances of our app running at the same time along with all aforementioned programs. I doubt you're that hard multitasker.

As for 212 Evo – firstly, your CPU will run much cooler for sure. Secondly, with GPU there will be noise, but when you don't do GPU-heavy tasks and just browse the internet or something it will be quieter. Box coolers are pretty loud. I do not know how you tolerate noise but I've put cooler that people use for OC on top of non-OC CPU (my rig is in my signature) just because it's dead silent. I don't game for now (waiting for a GPU) and I've set my case fans to stop spinning on low temps. CPU stays 28-29 degrees with ambient temp being 22 degrees Celsius when I'm browsing or watching movies and case fans don't spin, so the most noisy part of my rig is PSU cooler, which isn't as silent as Noctua's one but it's barely audible at half a meter distance.

And I do recommend you to think about that monitor. 27in is quite a size, too, and might not fully fit into your field of vision if you're sitting too close to it.

You are the best 0x1eef!

I will go to some stores this weekend and check out the 27 size. I will see how my kids feel about that as well.

I will go back down to 8 GB and can just add more in a few years if needed and am sure then for cheaper.

On the fan, from what I understand, will the i5 provided fan run full speed all the time regardless of need?

For clarification: it's obvious i can't have 9GB used when my rig has 8GB of RAM but I perform that everyday multitasking on my work PC which has 16GB of RAM :)

On the fan: no, a motherboard will adjust the speed just like it does with aftermarket cooler. Of course, new cooler is optional, you won't overheat CPU with stock one. For the noise part, it's also a very personal thing. Some people say their stock coolers are quiet and nobody knows if that person has high tolerance for noise, deaf or just plain lucky.

2x4 will perform better. Find some 1600MHz 2x4GB CL8/CL9 RAM like Corsair Vengeance or G.Skill Ripjaws X or Snipers.
