I want to know which of these cards is better. The gtx 970 is the msi gaming 4g $335 and the 290x is the xfx $310. I know about the whole 3.5gb vram issue with the 970. will this affect the performance if I was running triple 1080p monitors? also my motherboard supports 3 way crossfire but only 2 way sli. I don't think this is an issue as I probably won't be getting 3 cards in the future. I am just getting one for now. So which of these should i get? the 290x is cheaper by $25.

Thanks
EDIT: I will mostly be playing GTA 5 and a little bit of BF4

Solution

These are 4K resolution results, but you can get a gauge of performance. They're pretty even at higher resolutions on those two games.

With that, the GTX 970 comes with a free copy of the Witcher 3, and is going to have the usual Nvidia/Maxwell advantages: low power usage, cooler temperatures, quieter noise levels, very high overclocking potential, better driver support, PhysX, Adaptive VSync, and unique graphics settings like, MFAA, TXAA, FXAA, and HBAO+. The GTX 970 is also going to come with full DirectX 12.1 support at the hardware level, while the 290X is only going to support DirectX 12.0 through software...

Both have the same amount of vRAM at 4GB.

The 970 is said to perform better than the 290X at higher resolutions (multi-display).

On the other hand, if you want to toy with overclocking, the 290X is probably a better option.

You're right, that is backwards. :)

And you'll want the GTX 970 if you want to toy around with overclocking.

Crossed wires :).... R9 cards come outta the box with a pretty aggressive clock.... the 970 leads the 290x at 1080p at stock settings .... the the lead grows significantly when both overclocked. At 1440p, the 970 lead is smaller but at 4k 290x does better @ stock). You can see that in the link below

I want to know which of these cards is better. The gtx 970 is the msi gaming 4g $335 and the 290x is the xfx $310.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_970_SLI/20.html

At 1920 x 1080, the 970 is about 8% faster stock
At 2560 x 1440, the 970 is about 2% faster stock
At 5760 x 1080, the 970 is about 1% slower stock
At 3840 x 2160, the 970 is about 1% slower stock

At 1920 x 1080, the 970 is about 8% faster stock (12% OC'd)*
At 2560 x 1440, the 970 is about 2% faster stock (6% faster OC'd)
At 5760 x 1080, the 970 is about 1% slower stock (2% faster OC'd)
At 3840 x 2160, the 970 is about 1% slower stock (0.2% faster OC'd)

* TechPowerup got a 14% OC on the MSI 970 and a 10% OC on the MSI 290x

In BF4, one 970 gets ya 30.9 fps @ 5760 x 1080, SLI will get ya 55.7 fps

Cost wise.... don't forget to figure in....

a) 2 x 290x needs a 200 watt bigger PSU and prolly another case fan.

b) Ya get a $60 coupon get Witcher 3.

c) power costs ... unless landlord (or mom) pats utilities :) and especially if ya pay a lot for power.

Was gonna say only had cupla weeks more for that Witcher thing but looks like nvidia extending til June 30

By then you might bel be looking at the 390x versus 980 Ti :)
