I have a Dell E6420 XFR with the i7-2620M and was looking for possibly upgrading the CPU what are my options?
Would it be possible/advisable to getting a 775 socket adapter to 771 and going with a server based CPU?

that is a laptop so the lga 775 and 771 cpus are not compatible as they are desktop sockets, and also the i7 2620m that u have is socket G2/BGA 1023, it is an upgradable cpu, but Dell does not specify which cpus it supports. It took me 15 minutes to find any kind of documentation on their site, and no where is a compatibility list or anything. Contact dell and see what cpus u can upgrade too.

You currently have a dual core mobile i7, and the obvious upgrade would be to go to a mobile quad core i7, but requires knowing which one that the laptop can use. The cpus for the laptop without knowing what it can support would be sandy bridge mobile i7s. The quad cores range from 2.0ghz to 2.7 ghz, but the higher end range is in the extreme range and is quite pricey.

Edit: the Mobile quad core i7s have a "qm" after the model number showing it to be a quad core mobile chip. and the 2xxx will be the second generation sandy bridge chips as well so something along the lines of i7 2xx0qm is what u would look for if the laptop supports them
