How to connect 2 LANs with 2 ISPs using a multi WAN router

Hi there,
I hope someone can help me with a problem I thought was a fairly simple task.

I have a business LAN with ADSL and next doors (60 meters) I have a private LAN also with ADSL. So the 2 ISPs are terminated in two separate buildings. Between the two buildings I have 1 Cat5 cable.

At the moment I have connected the 2 LANs by using static IP on one LAN and DHCP on the other. So far so good.
Current setup:

ISP---modem/wifi---switch1---switch2---modem/wifi---ISP

On the switches I have security camera’s and my pc’s. I do not have a dedicated cat5 from my home to my business. If really needed I can ask my ISP to terminate both Internet connections at my business and feed direct into the multi wan switch but this is not my preference as my private ADSL is faster than my business ADSL.

Goal:
I need to share printers and security camera’s over the 2 LANs and I like to introduce load balancing and ISP back-up.

Hardware:
I bought a TP-link TL-ER5120 multi wan router and thought this will do the trick. I also have two TL-SG1008 and a TL-SG1016 switch
User guide: http://www.tp-link.com/resources/document/TL-ER5120_V2_User_Guide_1910010931.pdf

I am struggling with the right settings as I am not an expert.
Main questions:
1) When setting up the ER5120 it will ask me the system mode (NAT, non-NAT and Classic). What should I do?
2) Next it is asking the connection type. I do have a static IPs from my ISP but is this what I need to enter? When testing it I cannot get the router to work with this IP. It will work with the gateway IP 192.168.1.1 (or 2.1).
3) Do I need to do anything with NAT settings? Which DHCP should be active?
4) What do I need to do to get the load balance and/or ISP fail over to work? As soon as I take the active port from WAN1 there is no fail-over and the network will not work

Additional questions:
5) My modem is also taking care of the wifi. Can I still use this wifi or does it physically be separated from the modem? So Can I use the modem as Internet gateway and can I still use the wifi part for the LAN?
6) Is it better to separate the LAN in 2 LANs (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1)
7) Do I need additional security?

All help is much appreciated!
Cheers,
Jerome

You are going to have a hard job getting that dual wan router to be used. It really needs to be hooked directly to both internet connections directly.

To the end user it needs to appear as the dual wan router hooks its LAN to both switches and it then control which isp you use. To do this with the cabling configuration you have you really should use vlans. but your switches do not support that and unless you want to run lots more cables you can't hook this up.

You I suppose could run both ISP router with static ip. say 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x and then use 192.168.3.x as the lan port on the multi wan router and let it run dhcp for all the PC. To do this with your switches you would plug a 3 ports of the multiwan router into the same switch. If that does not sound very wrong it should.
It will work but only because of the subnet masks. It is a extremely non standard install and some things do not work correctly. You will also have issues if you allow wireless devices to directly connect to the router in the building they are in. They really need to connect to the dual wan router

Since you are already using static ip on of the router it may be simpler to just manually do this and if you lose one of the internet connection manually change it.

What you can do is let 1 router be the main router and give out dhcp on say 192.168.1.x. Then assign router 2 a ip outside the dhcp scope say 192.168.1.100. Then on the pc you want to use it you also assign them ip outside the scope say 192.168.1.101 and put in a gateway of 192.168.1.100.
Since they are now all on the same subnet everything will work and you manually control which internet connection is used by changing the default gateway.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your answer. I am afraid I did come to the same conclusion as you did. I will move physically the private modem to the business. Then I can hook up both the modems to the Multi Wan switch and build the network from there. Probably I need to buy some modems and use the current wireless/modems as pure wireless gateways.
Cheers,
