I made a topic a month ago asking about why my 2TB Western Digital External Hard Drive was transferring slow and i got the usual responses that perhaps it was dying or had bad sectors. I tried doing a disk check and data recovery but none of it worked.

It started when i was transferring files to the external hard drive from my PC and suddenly the transfer froze and i just cancelled it. When i took the drive out and plugged it back in, the computer wouldn't recognize it and it just kept blinking..i thought it died until i just left it in and suddenly it showed up as a Local Disk..and then eventually showing as My Passport and i was able to access the files. Unfortunately everything was really slow from accessing the files to transferring..it was literally a slow crawl as i tried to transfer files one by one and it would take 2-6 hours just to transfer one big media file :pfff:

so after 2 weeks of agonizing torture of transferring them, i just did it anyway because i couldn't do anything else and i didn't want to lose these files..but recently i was transferring another file and the transfer speed started going super fast like it used to do... I thought it was a fluke but then i started transferring another and again it was really fast. even accessing the file directory was fast and i knew then that the drive was working again and i was able to back up everything in a day. i figured it was just a one time thing so after i unplugged it and plugged it back in a couple days later, again it showed up and i was able to access everything again just fine and there was no slow downs or problems etc..:bounce:

does anyone know what happened to make the drive just work again? i mean like i said, i did a disk check and it failed to fix anything and i never formatted it either and the SMART test never worked..

Hi there mdb1983,

I's sorry that you had such experience with your WD drive. :(
It sounds that the drive is unreliable and you should not store important data on it.
After it is working properly now, you can try retesting the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. You can run a check disk as well. If the test results show that there is something wrong with the drive, and if it is still under warranty, you can contact WD's Support either by phone or e-mail and eventually RMA the drive.
Have you tried something simple as just using another USB cable? If not, you can do so. It is possible that you weren't able to access the drive with several software tools because of a bad(or going bad) cable.

I seem to be having this exact issue with my 2TB My Passport. It completely failed and showed as unallocated in disk management. Running the Data Lifeguard tool failed all tests including the 'write zeros' test so I gave up and left it to one side for the weekend. Today I insert the drive into my laptop and it's suddenly working, albeit extremely slow but it's working. I am now running a chkdsk repair hoping this will bring it back to life. Does anyone know what would cause this issue???

Hi there HAM0511,

That is unpleasant. :(

What did the fail message say?
As the HDD is currently recognized my suggestion would be to try to back up the data stored on it.(in case you have any) The disk check process could be data destructive.

Most probably, there is something physically wrong with the drive.(bad sectors in most cases) There's no way to fix that and I don't think chkdsk would help.

Is the drive under warranty? In case it is, you can just RMA it.(link above)

Keep in mind that it is always a good idea to open up a new thread.
