Unable to Format a 1tb WD Blue Internal HDD - Windows 8.1

Dear Community

This is my first post, so be gentle - although I have lurked for a long time. Basically, got a 1TB WD Blue, an internal HDD, from PC World earlier, as a wee gift to myself for meeting a lot of targets. I put it in the Hot Swap area at the top of my PC (Where I had previously used a 240gb internal HDD, which worked fine from there).

I was able to see it in the Disk management, and I initialised and whatnot. I set it up as a Simple Volume and set it to be an NTFS File Format, but it failed at that stage, as a message came up "Windows Was Unable to Complete the Format". Now to clarify, it then showed up properly in Disk Management if that makes sense, as well as under My Computer with the Label I had attached to it, "R:/". I could not access it there though and it told me I needed to format before I could use. I of course searched on Google endlessly but all the stuff was for either older versions of Windows, or it was for External, USB enabled storage devices. I would really like to get this to work, rather than return it and have tried everything I can think of. Unchecking "quick format" caused it to hang with no progress being shown. I hope someone can help, as I would really appreciate it.

Yours sincerely,

Robbie Newton

Hey there, Robbie.
Sorry to hear about the issues with your new drive. It's good that you were able to initialize it, because this increases the chances that it would be recognized by DLG (Data Lifeguard Diagnostic). I'd recommend to download it and run both tests (Quick and Extended), to see what's the situation with the drive and if there's anything wrong with it. Here's where you can download it from: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows.
I'd also recommend that you try the drive with a different computer, to see if the same thing happens.

Please let me know how everything goes.
