Hi

I've been trying to get a stable overclock for my i7-4770k CPU + GTX680 sli. After some tinkering I thought I found the ideal settings:
CPU:
Clock: 4.4GHz
Vcore: 1.24V
Uncore: 3,8Hz
Vrin: 1.80
GPU:
6500MHz
1260Mhz

The idle temp of the CPU is around 29°C. GPU temp never goes over 72°C in full load, CPU temp hovers around 76°C full load.

Did a couple of test with:
3DMark11 --> pass
Heaven4.0 --> pass
Intell burn test --> pass (although CPU temps reach 92°C)
Witcher 2 with ubersampling played for hours --> no problem

But when playing Tomb Raider, the game always crashes. The crash happens always after 30 to 45min of play. I noticed Tomb Raider uses a lot of the CPU thus making the CPU run hotter (72°C max temp ; 63°C an average before crash) then for example the witcher 2 (56°C full load).

I'm at a loss here. I want my system to be stable, and the crashes of the game shows its not. But I don't know how to figure out with setting I should change or where to look. Does any one have any idea why this could be happening? Any advise?

Thanks

I think that Tomb Raider taxes the CPU enough that it can't sustain 4.4 GHz. Even though it passed the stress tests, they tax the CPU in different ways than games.
My advise to you is to drop it to 4.3 GHz and run it in Prime95 for at least 6 hours, and then run Tomb Raider. If it passes, then you have hit the overclocking sweet spot. If not, then drop it another notch. Repeat until stable.

Hi techie

Thanks for the advise. I never used prime95 because I found info stating that using the intel burn test is much quicker (doesn't take 6 hours) and can also be used as stress test. But this seems not correct. Using intel burn test 3 times in a row, no issues found. Running Prime95 --> BSOD after 10min. I downed a notch to 4.3Ghz --> BSOD after 20 min. Downed one more notch to 4.2Ghz --> running stable for almost an hour.

@Ancient:
Good question. It does help, but only a little. Cranking up the GPU is much more effective. Thanks for the reply
