I am planning a new build and want to transfer as much of my desktop, settings, email, etc as I can, and I understand that Easy transfer is anything BUT on Win 8.1. My games, files and photos, etc are on separate drives, which I will physically transfer.

I will have to do a clean install with the new MoBo, and really want to be able to get at the junk I have on my desktop now (icons, email). I can clone the SSD to a spare HD, or do a transfer to an external drive. I assume I will not be able to just clone the drive back, as there will be old Mobo driver and BIOS issues.

What will work best? And how much stuff won't work anyway..(game icons, etc.)? MOST programs are on the other drives....but I know I have experienced difficulties in the past .... I haven't done a build in quite a while. I am old of date and rusty!

As you obviously understand you will fresh-install the Win 8.1 on your SSD, but before doing so it probably would be advisable (as you anticipate) to clone the contents of the SSD to another drive.

After the OS install and the drivers install you'll just have to fresh-install the programs on the cloned drive to the SSD. I just don't see any practical way around this. Presumably there should be little difficulty in copying your user-created files/folders from the cloned drive back to the SSD via a flash drive or CD/DVD or some such.
