Motherboard upgrade tips and help please?

I am completely new to upgrading a motherboard.
I have a ASUS Z97-K -- 2x PCIe x16, 4x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0
Any information to look for when upgrading?
All help is appreciated.
If you need any more specs just ask.

Guessing you have a K model CPU, so would suggest a step up to the Z97-A since we don't know the budget, the Asus Z97 Pro gamer is right there also, if the budget is bigger the Asus Hero, can compare features here:
