My computer screen froze but the sound still worked. I was talking to a friend on skype and that didn't freeze. I hard rebooted my computer and the monitor cycled through the connections, said no input on the screen, then went back to sleep. I switched to the motherboard's HDMI slot and it works. I checked the windows devices and it said that the video card is working properly. I just got this computer 4 months ago. My graphics card is a AMD Radeon R9 285 2GB. Any help is appreciated.

"I checked the windows devices and it said that the video card is working properly"

Well of course it is, otherwise there would be nothing on the screen and the monitor would go to sleep.

Try re-seating the card (ie pull it out, then firmly push it back & screw backplate down firmly.

there is a capacitor right under the clip and I'm confused as to how to unseat it. The video on the motherboard wouldn't work if the video card isn't working? I thought they were independent?

They on-board graphics adapter & the PCIe graphics card are independent indeed. When I said to re-seat it, I was referring to the PCIe Radeon card, not the on-board one (that's not removable).

If the on-board one works okay and the Radeon one doesn't , then my guess is the Radeon card has packed up completely.

Replace the Radeon card or carry on using the on-board HDMI.
