Overclocking a Q8300 on an Asus P5N-D

I am currently bidding on an Asus P5N-D motherboard on Ebay, to replace my current motherboard that came with a pre built Packard Bell PC. I have an old Core 2 Quad Q8300, which I heard has some decent overclocking chops.

How should I attempt to overclock on this board? I haven't overclocked chips this old before and I've heard there's a lot of trial and error involved. Treating me like a complete newbie is fine, I really want as much info as possible because I have a bad habit of breaking everything I touch!

I only have a crappy Arctic Cooling Alpine 11 Pro right now, which is no better than the Intel stock cooler. I'm looking to buy a Raijintek Aidos as a replacement after I buy the motherboard. How well should this cooler hold out?

Also, the board I am buying comes with a fan to cool the NB heatsink, should I leave it on or remove it, apparently it works fine with and without? I'm worried about the noise. It's a small fan and apparently extremely noisy.

Thanks in advance,

Woody
