Hello all, I posted a build a few days ago to get opinions and didn't get much feedback. I've done extensive research and edited my build a bit. My budget is $1500 and it is a gaming rig but will also be used for some 3D modeling/digital art. Also, I might overclock the cpu a bit but most likely will not overclock the gpu. so i'm not interested in the "better gpu for oc" debate.

Let me know if there is anything, in your experience that would work better in a price for performance ratio. Thanks!

Wow, that is quite a nice build. No changes for me, but I guess if you want to save a few bucks you can change your CPU cooler to a COOLER MASTER HYPO EVO 212 since you are only planning to overclock a little bit and it works just as well.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($28.89 @ OutletPC)
Total: $28.89
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

thanks. That's the one thing i wasn't too sure on was if the cooler was overkill/not enough, etc. If you think that will work well enough and it's cheaper, then i'm all for it :)

Yeah, a lot of users in this forum actually recommend this cooler as well. I think it will great and it will save you some money :)

It is most appreciated. I will switch it into my build now.

If you have a budget of $1500, you could bump up to a DDR4 build with a 5820K for just a few bucks more which will help with 3D modeling and be a little more "future-proof"

The 5820k has 4 more threads than the 4790k and is a great overclocker, I can OC mine to 4.3GHz without even changing the voltage.

Thanks for the input, I'll look over it.. Is there any advantage to going for a 4 x 4GB build over a 2 X 8GB? Just something I've been wondering even if it doesn't weigh into anything.

I already have a monitor as of a few months ago. It is a BenQ RL2755HM. Very nice monitor in my opinion.

A 5820K will be wasted on gaming. For photo and video editing the extra bandwidth is useful but also isn't really necessary. I would go with Z97 instead. If gaming weren't a factor then X99 would be warranted but really it's more expensive for not a lot of gain in performance.

I'm not sure about the x99, if it would be better or not for editing, but as they said, its a more future proof build, for example, because the CPU have more cores, with very good gaming performance (at least at the same level of an i7), but more expensive and less efficient (140w TDP).

Meanwhile I made some changes to your build, by selecting: faster ram (which might help with editing), a better PSU (tier 1 - better build quality - and gold rated - more efficiency); motherboard with usb 3.1 support and cheaper; a faster GPU, a different optical drive, and a diffferente case (unless you are planning on going with 3 way SLI I think you dont need to expend so mutch money on a case. Other good options if you want a full tower:

That's not going to make a build "future proof" - essentially nothing will. The only real difference between X99 and Z97 is that the i7-5820K has two extra cores and DDR4 RAM. It can also support three way SLI and Crossfire. I would not use an Antec 900 though - it's way outdated (has no cable management, CPU retention, or USB 3.0 - all musts for a modern rig) and there's much better cases you can get for the money now.

This is what I would do:

no future proof, so funny, so a i5 build will last as long as an i7 build?

The GTX 980 is an overkill, for 1080p the difference between the 980 and the 970 is very low: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2015-vga-charts/compare,3664.html?prod%5B7265%5D=on&prod%5B7477%5D=on

That is why I asked OP for his monitor.

On the other end it will blow up the budget.

Dont think its worth paying 20 pounds more to get an 2400 mhz ram, specially since it works at 1.65v, meaning more power consumption, and its not even recommended to use a ram with higher voltage then 1,5 with Intel Haswell Refresh (check notes from your build.

Changing motherboard will lead to losing usb 3.1

the thing about it is the difference between ddr3 and ddr4 is so small for what I will be doing, I won't ever notice it. http://www.pcgamer.com/the-differences-between-ddr3-and-ddr4-ram/
And as for the case, It's more of an aesthetic appeal to me. I don't mind spending $50 extra for a case that I can wake up and say "hello sexy" to. I guess it's to each their own. gtx980 is definitely an overkill especially for the extra $200 their wanting for it.
