GTX 970 only using ~550MB of its memory?

So my brand new GTX 970 ( in my new computer) hasn't allowed me to play over ~35 FPS in Smite. I did a bit of work; checking drivers, reinstalling, running tests, etc. Come to find out, via GPU-Z, that while Smite is running I'm only using ~550MB of the 4GB memory it has. Is it defective? Is there anything else I'm missing?

This is a widely publicized issue with the GTX 970. While it has/uses 4GB of VRAM, it only addresses 3.5GB with the primary memory controller. The final 0.5GB is addressed via another controller, and because of a disabled L2 cache, this memory is accessed very slowly. This can be a significant performance hit. NVidia has put out driver updates that do a better job of memory allocation to help mitigate this issue. Make sure you have the latest driver. To learn more, you can Google "gtx970 memory issue"

I've seen the issue yes, but mine is ONLY using 550MB, not missing it from the 4GB.

Apologies, I misread your original post as not using ~550MB. Smite only requires about 512MB of VRAM according to this:

http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/Requirements/Smite/11514

So, the VRAM usage seems fine. What are your other components (motherboard, CPU, RAM)? Your FPS must be restricted by other components.

You buy a gallon of milk at the store. After 2 days, the jug is only half full. Is that a problem?

Just because "you" have 4GB of video memory, only a small percentage of us have 4GB, and then a larger number of people have 2GB, and even more people have 1GB. The developers of Smite apparently made the decision to only use 550MB of video memory, and so thats all it uses.

Very few games will use more than 2GB of video memory. I paid extra to future proof my video card a little bit in case I ever bought a game that required 4GB of memory. But I have yet to have found that game.

I guess I really just phrased it poorly. I get that I can use only that much memory now, but it a till doesn't solve the main issue, which is the (very) poor framerate.
