So in disk utility instead of formatting my 16 GB USB drive called 'untitled' I formatted into ExFAT my other 'untitled' external hard-drive, which had nearly an entire terabyte of files on it. 80% just backups, but some files are really quite essential for my university course.

I have not written any new files at all to the drive since.

What would people recommend is the best option? I see an absolute flood of data recovery programs on the market, but none of them seem to have all the file type functions I need. I mean a lot say 'will recover .mp4, mpeg, .doc, .flv, .xxx, etc] but not all the files that I will really really need to be recovered ...

So does apple have any kind of native recovery tool for this? Or am I going to have to go third party?

And if I have to go third party any recommendations about the very best software to use would be really really be helpful. As the marketing for these types of software seems to far outweigh the results I was able to find with serious facts about their functionality. I am willing to pay for the very best of the best.

Thanks.

Hardware: OS X Yosemite (10.9.5), Customac, Intel, High spec everything.

bad copy pro has worked for me. Does cost some money, but totally worth it. Don't even power the hard drive on until you decide what you are going to do. The less you mess with it, the more can be recovered.

this seems to be windows only software ...

Just being realistic. Depending on what has happened since you did the format and what "magic" tool you get, it is gonna be extremely difficult to recover anything.

Also, you will probably have exactly one shot to do it, depending again on which tool you opt for. I would consult very carefully before making a decision...that includes elsewhere.

So I summed all of the above up in a few words and that was what came out, just being honest rather than creating false hopes.

Nothing has happened since did the format. I disconnected it straight away. And thanks for clarifying why you were so blunt.

I've been recommended by the *ahem* experts on the apple forum that data rescue 4 is the best opinion for MAC. And judging from reviews, comments, and other functions it lists, it does seem to be a good option. Not cheap though, $100 at least. I am going to wait for other maybe more powerful options to elucidate themselves until I dive in headfirst with that one.

Hi

General principals
Do not try to write recovered files to formatted disk
You need another disk to recover files to
After formatting you loose index containing file names
You get r00001.jpg, r00002.jpg. ...

Long files which are fragmented are much more difficult to recover intact
For Linux or ntfs Windows I would use testdisk . Photo recovery suite from
CgSecurity.org
But it does not seem to support OS/X format

There are some recovery programs in trial versions
Either only recovers limited amount of data
Or shows what could be recovered if you buy a licence on line

One step professional may take is to clone the drive and run different recovery programs on the cloned drive. This is more important if drive has bad sectors .

http://www.easeus.com/mac/mac-data-recovery/
This is a well known data recovery software company for windows & Mac
Both free & pay for version

Best of luck

Thanks that was very very helpful for me. I will clone first maybe. And your linked to software looks like another good option.

Maybe I should clarify that the drive was originally formatted in standard apple format (hfs+ journaled indexed something something) ... just standard OSX format. Don't know if that helps at all or not.
