So I've just ordered an SSD off of newegg and I would like to know the best way to use it for the purpose I got it for, without losing any of my data and re-downloading as little as possible.

I have had my pc for about half a year now and I have a lot of games and pictures etc. My intentions are to use the SSD for startup, and a few of my most frequently played games and programs. I want to use my hard drive as storage for the rest. What is the best way to do this? Do I need to put a new copy of windows on the SSD?

In this case, you need to backup all the photos music videos etc. and format the drive, as you don't want a second instance of the OS on there, nor do you want duplicates of all your programs etc.

Then you need to connect the SSD, preferably in the primary SATA slot (not key though) and reinstall it from scratch (having downloaded all crucial drivers like networking, chipset/mobo, gpu, sounds etc beforehand to a usb stick).

Otherwise you won't be booting from SSD and will run in to many complications.

So you are gonna have to bite the bullet and download everything and re-install it all to the new drive. Perhaps worth figuring this out BEFORE not after you buy something if it is gonna bother you. Oh well.
