Hi

I'm trying to set up our home network, but I'm having some trouble getting it to all work together correctly.

I have a NetGear DM111PSPv2 modem, which has OpenDNS parental controls to block websites.
I also have a Linksys 3500 Router, which has time controls to shut off the internet to kid's computers after a certain time.

What I was hoping to do was connect ISP (CenturyLink) to Netgear Modem to Linksys router. The Netgear modem would have the OpenDNS parental controls and control which sites could be accessed, and the Linksys would have the time controls tied to different computers for the kids.

However, I can not seem to make it work right.

I have the Netgear Modem set to PPPoE, and it connects to the ISP just fine. I have it set as DHCP server, with a very small range (192.168.1.2 ...192.168.1.3) to connect to the Linksys Router (DHCP reserved for 1.2) and then one open address for a laptop for troubleshooting if something goes wrong in the system.

I then have the Linksys Router set to connect to the Netgear Modem and then DHCP the rest of the house with a range of 192.168.10.1 to 10.255.

Then all the problems start!!!!

With the above setup ....
1) The Linksys changes the DHCP base seemingly randomly. One day 10.54.xxx.xxx, then the next day 10.99.xxx.xxx, and then 10.212.xxx.xxx the next day. When reading about it on the Linksys website, what I think I understood what that if the Linksys detects a conflict, then it corrects by switching the DHCP range to avoid the conflict. So, obviously, I have something set up wrong that makes the LinkSys unhappy.

Note, the network WORKS this way ... every computer can get out to the internet, BUT internally it causes all kinds of problems. Network printing is hit or miss because the computers knew the printer to be at 10.99.10.128 yesterday, but can't find the printer there today, because it is now 10.212.1.128 today. Likewise, the NAS is difficult to access because it's address keeps changing.

2) SO, I figure it must be the two DHCP servers. So I can go to the Netgear Modem, and change it from a router to a dumb modem, and move the PPPoE login to the LinkSys Router. This also works (i.e. everyone can get to the internet), but now the OpenDNS parental controls no longer work, because the Netgear Modem is in Dumb mode.

3) SO, I try it again, but put the LinkSys into bridge mode, which again works (i.e. everyone can get to the internet), but now it's time based parental controls, and smart share, and other features don't work any more.

SOOOO

Is it possible to have BOTH the Netgear AND the Linksys both set up as full routers on the same network, so that they both can be "fully functional".

Should the DHCP range on the FIRST DHCP server (the Netgear Modem) be set to INCLUDE or EXCLUDE the DHCP range on the SECOND DHCP server (the Linksys Router)?

Is there a different mode that I should be putting one or the other into?

Is it related to the NAT tables, or DHCP, or something else "being doubled up"

There are options like "RIP" sharing or "DMZ" ... which I don't understand. Would they help?

What about UPnP or Static Routes? Will those help?

Thanks
