While I was playing a game earlier my computer just shut down so i checked my bios. The CPU temp started at around 44c and then rises up to 62c and then just shuts down. I cleaned out my heatsink and applied new thermal paste and now it starts at around 44 and then climbs up to 57 and just sits there. I'm guessing that this isnt a good idle temp and I dont know why it suddenly changed. This is the first time it's happened and I do not know what to do.

Solution
It sounds like something went wrong with the thermal paste application.

Before applying any thermal paste, you should always clean the CPU surface off. isopropyl alcohol works very well for this. Put a dab on the CPU surface and rub it in a bit. Let sit for 10 minutes.

When you come back, dry the surface off with cloth or material that won't leave bits behind. Coffee filters are a good choice.

Make sure that you have something that can spread the paste well. You are going to put a pea sized drop in the middle of the CPU and then spread it out. You don't have to get all the way to the edges of the CPU and it's better if you don't. Just make sure that the center is covered.

If you still get bad results after this, you may want...

If you still get bad results after this, you may want to try a different thermal paste or cooler. Also remember that case fans can affect CPU temps and that you should check to make sure that they are all running.

Are these temps regular for when im sitting in the bios? I dont think so. I've reapplied the thermal paste as thor's said and im still getting these temps. Any other solutions? All of the bios settings are set to default aswell.

Sounds like a frustrating issue. How many case fans do you have running?

Typically, 62 at load isn't an issue. Those processors don't really start having an issue until you get to 80 or greater. I'm wondering if the motherboard is misreporting those values.

I remember that my 945BE didn't even reach 45c overclocked. He did already try re-applying thermal paste. Must be something with the heatsink.

Luckily you can get a really good one for around $20 these days.
