Hi guys,

I own 4x 5TB Seagate Expansion USB HDD (STBV5000200).
I run Windows 8.1 pro x64 on a desktop PC.

Two weeks ago, after installing some Windows updates, after rebooting my PC, one of the drives switched to "Unknown File System\Raw Data".
The drive was plugged, along the others, to an usb hub and which remained connected through the updates installation and sytem reboot.
The drive, which is only 2 months old, passes a "Short Self Test" and has 100% health passing all SMART attributes.
I have managed to access the drive with the utility Testdisk and I tried to write a new partition table but that didn't fix it.
The files can be copied, via Testdisk, although that takes forever.

I haven't even finished recovering the data from the first disk that the exact same thing happened to a second drive!
Unlike with the first drive, before rebooting my PC to install the Windows updates, I safely ejected all my usb drives.
Nonetheless after reconnecting them another drive was inaccessible with the same error: "Unknown File System\Raw Data"

At this point I removed all the installed updates in the vague hypothesis that they might be the culprit although 2 other drives worked fine.
As expected the "system restore" achieved nothing.

I have already tried all the usual suggestions that can be found on the manufacturer's website.
-Change usb cable
-Change adapter
-Plug adapter to wall plug
Etc. etc.

This has never happened to me in 15 years of using a PC and usb drives and I cannot imagine it happening twice in 2 weeks.

I hope someone can help me out.

Thank you.

Hi shivababbli,

Thanks for the suggestion but can you suggest some software please?
Will this software be able to "see" the drive cause the only way to get to my files that I know of is Testdisk.

I also need to determine what causes this problem cause to image a drive i need to buy a new one and i just bought one to recover the first one that went bad.
I cannot afford to do this every month so I must understand if i am doing something wrong.

Thank you

Thanks again for your help.

Maybe I have too many hdds connected or one of your other hypothesis.
Is there any way to test those components?

I checked Easeus Partition Recovery and to be honest it just looks like testdisk with a gui and since i am unsure of what it exactly does i don't want to make the drive totally inaccessible.

In the Event Viewer i found this error message if it can be of any help:

A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume I:
The Master File Table (MFT) contains a corrupted file record. The file reference number is 0x3000000000003. The name of the file is "<unable to determine file name>

Here is a screen of the details:

Thank you.

P.s. why whatever I do on this site, even just browsing, is considered a threat and requires a captcha?

The best approach is to clone your drive, sector by sector, using a tool (eg ddrescue) that understands how to work around bad media. Then use data recovery software against the clone.

That said, I would use a disc editor (eg DMDE freeware) to Search for Special Sectors, eg MFT records. There should be an MFT mirror which is a copy of the first part of the MFT.

I had already installed DMDE few hours ago because someone recommended it in some similar posts I was reading before deciding to post.
The problem is it's too complex for my knowledge level so I would need to know what to do exactly please.

Thank you

Hi shivababbli,

I will try these further suggestions of your in the coming days and report back, thanks for all your help.

One thing I know for sure though is that chkdsk is not available on raw data drives as I had already tried that in the first days the first drive went bad.

As usual, if you or anyone else has any further suggestions please let me know.
