Hi everyone. I'm looking to upgrade my processor for something that's good for gaming, as my current processor is VERY outdated and slow. Unreliable for gaming.

My mobo's socket type is an LGA775. Here are my current specs, as displayed by Speccy.

Operating System
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

CPU
Intel Pentium E5200 @ 2.50GHz
Wolfdale 45nm Technology

RAM
6.00GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 399MHz (6-6-6-18)

Motherboard
PEGATRON CORPORATION Benicia (CPU 1)

Graphics
LG 23M45 (1920x1080@60Hz)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti (ASUStek Computer Inc)

Storage
931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-1CH162 (SATA)

Optical Drives
HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW GBC-H20L

Thanks.

I disagree with this. LGA 771 cpus like the X5460 can be had for very cheap and offer the exact same performance and often better overclocking due to the more stringent binning process. However you need to make sure your motherboard will support it with the 775-771 mod.

They don't, the architecture is almost exactly the same. His logic is flawed.

It is up to the instructions sets, i may be wrong but server cpu's had less instructions then the desktop cpu's.

Yes, you are wrong. modern low-mid xeons are pretty much identical to the equivalent desktop cpus, usually with additional features like the ability to use ECC ram (motherboard permitting). This is why the Xeon 1231v3 is often recommended as an i7 alternative for cheaper, performs almost identically (tiny clock speed difference).

Yes i know about the 1230-1231-1220, they are a i7 without integrated gpu, but is more recent, anyway just compared a bit those cpu's and they are identical even number of transistors, die size.

Yes, because they are pretty much the same cpu as I said (Q9xxx and X54xx).

Hi mate! I am going simillar way as you are. I have Asus P5E - Deluxe mobo and it would never stop surprising me! :) Once upon a time I bought this mobo with minimum knowledge, I didn´t even dreamed of what I get! These days I tune it up with my third CPU - Core2Quad Q9550 (E8500 was first and very good, Q6600 was second, and too bad), from the first days I run it with 4 GB DDR2 Corsair Dominator PC2-8500 (1066 MHz) and only DirectX 10.0 nVidia GT 275 Lightning OC card. To be honest, thanks to my 24" CRT monitor, set to 1600x1024@100 Hz I can play all the newest games which can be started with DX10 only, but on maximum details :) Now I am looking for 8 GB DDR2 Corsair Dominator, but it is quite trouble to get it in four 2GB modules...
Anyway! I would recommend you to upgrade the memory to 8 GB DDR2 533 MHz (1066) @ 5-5-5-15 (some Corsair XMS2 or Kingstone...) or decrease it to 4 GB, because 6 GB will never (I suppose) run in dual channel.. :-( And check also your mobo spec. to see which CPU can your mobo handle! And of course don´t forget to your power source! For your current spec. there should be at least 650 W! With your graphic card it would "eat" 850 W as candy ;-)
And flush away those win 8 man...! ...uuugh, but just my opinion :)
So good luck and may the fOrCe will be with you!
