Recently, my keyboard and mouse have stopped working at random times of the day. It started about a week ago, after installing routine windows updates. I was in the middle of a video game, and my mouse and keyboard no longer received any input. Cursor would not move, keyboard would not respond. Even the lights that signify if capslock is on would not work. Changing USB ports did not work, either on the front or the back of the case. At first I thought it was the game, and so did a restart. It fixed the problem, but a few hours later the problem occurred again.

What I've discovered so far:

  • There is no windows disconnect sound unless I unplug the device, and even then it takes ~15 seconds for the sound to trigger.
I can unplug the device and plug it back in, and windows will play the correct sounds for removing or adding a device, but no additional input will occur.
If the game was receiving an input when keyboard stops responding, ie: walk forward, it will continue to execute that input.
If a capslock indicator is lit up on keyboard before it stops responding, the light will stay lit.

What I've tried so far:

  • Disabling USB 3.0 in BIOS
Disabling the option that lets windows disable devices to save power
    Reinstalled mouse drivers
    Reinstalled USB drivers
    Reseat motherboard connections to powersupply
    Using a different mouse

I'm at my wits end here. The computer works perfectly fine otherwise, and other connected USB devices continue to function. I have not added any more hardware to the computer in the last 9 months.
