Upgrading AMD Athlon II X4 640 to FX 8350 worth it?

A Stock Athlon 630 VS a Stock FX 8350 in gaming, the difference is running everything in Low to Medium with spikey FPS compared to Medium to Ultra with 35+ FPS. In general tasks you will notice a slight speed up from the MHz increase and added cores for Multi threading.

The difference will be there, but won't be huge. I would suggest you wait until next year when AMD Zen is out. Right now is not the greatest time to be upgrading CPUs. We're reaching the end of 28nm CPUs. If you can wait a while, you'll have superior performance with lower power consumption soon enough.

I had 645 in my HP machine. I was able to edit and mild game for the same 4 years and it was very powerful and got done what I needed. I built a new machine with a 990fx mobo and fx8320 and it is a remarkable difference in editing and gaming. My adobe premiere rendering times decreased drastically and what used to take 40 and 50 mines to render a full music video with lots of layers effects and transitions dropped down to abut 12mins. And games I don't even know how I was even able to play games with that processor. If you don't do the 8350 at least do the 8320, I can vouch for that.

You will need to get a good mobo with that CPU so dont go cheap on that or you wont have nice time with your new CPU.
Can you tell us a bit more about your current system and what parts do you plan to upgrade?

You are going to need a good full ATX 990FX board, not some bargain basement board and some good cooling.
