Hello

I bought a i7 4790K and motherboard today even though I really couldn't afford it.

I was going to buy a FX8350 and motherboard until I read the specs for Pro Tools which lists a i5 as the minimal cpu for it.
I am sure that a AMD can run on it but I don't know how well and if the software will function properly.

I will use my system for graphic design, 3D design, movie making and music and some games.

I bought a i7 4790k for 359 dollars including tax (original price 42,421 yen with a 118 dollar to yen rate) I checked on New Egg and the cpu shipped to me would have been 13 dollars less. But may take a week or a month to arrive.

Bought a used Gigabyte GAZ97X-UD5H mb for 80 dollars (9,525 yen with a 118 dollar to yen rate)
From Newegg I would have only saved 5 dollars after shipping it here.
It has a one month warranty

So the total is 440 dollars (51,946 yen)

I do not have money to buy a aftermarket cooler for about 2 weeks.
Will my cpu be ok?

I thought about getting the i5 4690K but with the talk of DX12 supporting multiple cores, more games taking advantage of more cores/threads, and the software I will use, uses as many cores/threads that you can throw at it, I decided to get some kind 6-8 core cpu. If it wasn't for Pro Tools stating that their software was certified and tested to run on i5 and i7 processors, I would have bought the FX8350, so I decided on the i7.
Does anyone think a i5 would be ok for now if return the i7 back? I could get a aftermarket cooler if I did that.

I do plan on building a i75820k later in the later part of the year.

Is this a good purchase, the i7 4790k and mb?

If your primary purpose is gaming, then an i5 is plenty of performance. If your primary purpose is for encoding video, using pro tools, and other applications that can utilize the threads better, then you will see greater benefit with the i7.

If you need the benefit of additional threads/cores, but money is an issue (you mentioned not being able to afford what you just bought, never a good situation to be in) you can always try a Xeon E3 1230 v3 and get quad core with hyperthreading for around $250, but it cannot be overclocked.

Thanks everyone.

Will I be ok using the stock cpu cooler for now?
