Will my AMD FX 8320 be good enough for my r9 280x to perform optimally?

hello, as stated I have an AMD fx-8320 with an r9 280x graphics card. my concern is that my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU. I haven't done any overclocking yet but I am relatively hesitant to do so.

1. without overclocking, is my CPU going to bottleneck my GPU?

2. if so, what would you recommend i do? obtain a different amd cpu? Overclock? (If so, send me a good tutorial? )

3. Any tips you recommend to optimize performance. I play a lot of GTA on pc on very high and get around 30-40 fps. i dont know if that it lower than what i should be getting since the GPU i have is better than what rockstar recommends.

Thank you!

Your CPU and GPU will do fine with GTA V in High settings for 60fps,even the FX 6300 with the R9 270X is able to(tested the Phenom II x4 955 with Radeon HD 5850,FX 6300 with R9 270X and FX 8320 with R9 290X),but since the per core perf is weak for AMD chips so that might explain the low framerate.
Did you try to vary with the graphics settings by tweaking every option?

Did you update the AMD Catalyst to the 15.4 beta version?(has optimizations for GTA V)

Just enable FXAA and leave MSAA off

Get the Intel i5 4690K for a CPU upgrade, that CPU is enough for not to cause GPU bottlenecks at stock levels (only to be choked by games that use more than 4 cores(not existed yet))

This video is quite good for a overclocking tutorial...
It would depend on whether the game is CPU bound or GPU bound.
In something like GTAV your CPU might hold you back.
There aren't really any better AMD CPUs than an FX-8320, you'd have to go to Intel to get better performance and that would also mean a new motherboard.
You may be able to just dial down some GTAV settings, like grass density, population density and things like MSAA.

Ok James, thank you for the response

so you think my graphics card is good enough? And my cpu may be bottlenecking the potential of my gpu? And do you know of any videos youd recommend for overclocking?

PS:
Make sure you have a aftermarket cooler and a good thermal paste for stable and decent overclocking.

I have tweaked the graphics a bit, but i have the graphics on high and dont get a stable 60fps. I'll try to turn on FXAA and leave MSAA off, if it isnt that way by default.

I think my AMD Catalyst updates itself? But I'll have to check.

Also, my case is not great and doesnt have great ventilation, i am getting a new case with many fans from my friend soon, im sure that'll help?

I would have to get a new mobo to get an intel cpu. Maybe after i get more money and can afford a new mobo and intel cpu.

I'll try the overclocking once i get my new case because once i do, i can put in my hyper 212 evo. Im not gonna oc my cpu with a stock fan.

Thanks :)

no bottlenecking there. i have everything on very high exept msaa 2x and grass at medium(i didn t see any difference between medium and high neither at fps nor the detail) my 8320 is clocked at 4.3 atm and i have th non x 280 and when i oc it i have 10 fps more than stock. dont spend your money on the 4690k. its better but it doesn't worth the 10 fps more for 100 bucks. its better to save money for a better gpu.

No problems mate, glad to help. Btw, what case are you getting next?
And for the solution the dude posted above, well its wise to keep your FX for now, since DX 12 is coming and FX chips will benefit well from it and with DX 12, the GPU and the amount of cores play the role of bottlenecking each other or not.

that's a good match, I usually try to go for a high end gpu and a mid range cpu for gaming. It gives you good price/performance for gaming. Don't worry, its a good pair and if you wanted you could even upgrade the gpu not have a bottleneck.
