I have an Inspiron 620 (not 620s). I need to put a PSU in it, I've tried multiple PSUs ranging from 300w-600w that work fine in their original machines but will not power this machine on when connected to it. Any thoughts?
On Dell computers there is a bracket (along with screws) that retain the power supply. You may have to bend this bracket out of the way when you install a new power supply.

It wasn't an issue of the PSU fitting into the case, the system just doesn't power up

Which brands and models of PSUs did you try?
I've seen a lot of Dell Inspiron 620 systems upgraded with Antec PSUs (i.e. the models that use Delta Electronics as their OEM).
Most of the ones I tried were older stock/non-branded PSUs.
One time I replaced a PSU in Dell desktop with an Antec 400 watts PSU (as ko888 mentioned), and everything worked fine.
If you did this and the computer does not power up, then the problem is elsewhere; maybe in addition to the PSU.
The weird part is the original power supply works fine, I was just hoping to install a better one so I could upgrade the GPU. I just don't understand what feature/function this stock dell power supply has that any of the others one I tried doesn't have.
