I'm new to this stuff i just want to make my computer better i have an asus dektop with an asus p8h61-m motherboard with a 3rd gen intel core i5 processor and 6 gigs of ram and a 350 watt power supply looking to increase that as well. my problem is i dont know whats compatible with what, can i throw in any power supply or ram or GPU or do i need specific things for this motherboard?
Well, your board does have a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot, so just about any modern graphics card should work with it. The performance difference between PCI-E 2.0 and 3.0 is negligible, so you should be able to manage just about any single card without issue.
For power supply requirements, generally speaking it's good to have at least a 550w power supply when running a single card. nVidia cards are a little less power hungry than AMD cards, but 550w minimum is a good baseline, just ensure that it has the proper power connections for the card you choose.
Given your platform, all but the highest end cards should perform just fine.
