What is better? the FX 8350? Or the i5 4690k? Consider this, the FX has about twice the cores as the i5, which consequently means more multithreaded tasks, but is that really important nowadays? The FX is also about $60-$80 less than the i5 (depending on who you're buying from), and each core is clocked to about 4 Ghz. Wow! The i5 isn't a disappointment either. I mean, Intel excels in the single core performance, significantly lower tdp, and absolutely crushes AMD in a variety of tasks, this is probably why AMD puts more cores for a much lower prices (IDK!). Anyways, I wanted to ask people about this, because I want to know which is worth it. I know all the specs, I've researched them about every single other day, (cuz ima computer budget enthusiast), AMD uses more power, and is therefore inferior, blah, blah, blah. I don't want any of this shit. I want an honest opinion. I could use that extra $80 bucks to buy a better graphics card. Is the performance difference noticeable? That is my final question. I will consider all answers, this will help me build my summer pc. Thanks for answering guys! Appreciate it!

Solution
Although the i5 does not support hyperthreading, If I had to, I would probably pick the i5 over the FX 8350 because the i5 is built on 22nm tech over the 8350's 32nm which is a pretty significant difference. Look into that.

I would probably just go a little higher and get an i7 and call it a day though ideally. The 8350 is definitely not going to be preferable to many processors at all in the near future, but i7's will.

If you're just going to be gaming, the 8350's "better side" is kind of irrelevant.

Also intel typically does perform better on a lot of tasks as you acknowledged. It will also use less power and stay cooler.

Also, in deciding between the $80 on graphics card or on CPU, what's your graphics card? Depending on what...

Solution
i5-4690K.

The i5 is much more powerful per core. If a game could actually use most of the FX-8350's processing that would be a different story but that's not the case today. DX12 will help a lot but that will take years to become common and even then might only mean both CPU's are similar in performance.

Also, any game already on the market won't run better because DX12 was released.

The ONLY significant reason to even consider the FX is price but I recommend looking at that $80 premium as a percentage of your TOTAL computer investment over a three-year period (hardware, internet, games...).

Update:
I disagree on considering the i7. It's rare to find much difference in gaming between an i5-4690K and i7-4790K but that price difference makes a HUGE difference for a graphics card. If the FX-8350 didn't pose such a serious bottleneck in plenty of games I'd be suggesting it for this very reason.

To restate, DX12 games will statistically use more of the CPU's cores but it also does so more EFFICIENTLY so there's plenty to suggest more than an i5-4690K won't be "worth it". That's good news to everybody except perhaps CPU sellers as many people will keep the same CPU longer.

If I could could afford either, I would buy NEITHER, and get the Haswell Xeon E3-1231. It's priced close to the i5, but has 8 logical cores. It's the best of both worlds. It would actually be cheaper once you factor in that you can use a cheaper H97 motherboard instead of a 990FX or Z97 board.

Depending on BUDGET, I'd consider the i5-4590 as my first choice instead.

At pcpartpicker USA, the i5-4590 is currently about $178 whereas that Xeon is $242. There's only 100MHz between Turbo values and most games won't benefit from the HT on the Xeon.

So for similar pricing I'd suggest the FX-8350 vs i5-4590 consideration. The FX-8350 would win slightly in some tasks but mostly ones that aren't real-time like gaming.

That's true, until you start recording gameplay in highest quality. That's when you'll want the extra 4 logical cores.

This is NOT representative of all games. If it had an FX-8350 you'd see several games doing noticeably worse likely but you can look for other benchmarks online.

My main POINT with this benchmark is to show many games perform similarly on modern Intel CPU's due to the load often being more on the GPU.

(Don't FLAME me guys. I know this is just one benchmark. Also, I'd ignore the "minimum FPS" score near the top since it shows an i3-4360 almost 2x that of an i5-4690. Seems like a major margin for error then for this test.)

it all about what are you using it for. if you are only going for 1 video card. it doesn't matter that much. I would pay more for the video card than the CPU if I'm only getting one video card. so for desktop I'll get the AMD caz it cheap and I don't care about the power bill that much.
take a look at this video. some dud talking about how much you will save on Intel over AMD over power bill.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBeeGHozSY0
But if you are talking about Laptop. then Intel is a 100% all the way for me. not caz of the power bill but the hrs that i'll get without an power outlet.
(even tho we all use tablet and phone but still it is an option that i want to keep it open.)

yes lot of people will tell you about. "Intel will give you future proof etc etc" but what is future proof? Moore's law? if that is true. don't think any computer will have such thing as future proof. and if you look at the pass few years. it all about energy efficiency for Intel. the speed haven't been doubling for a long time. let say you are using the first gen I7 release in November 2008 or AMD FX8350 release in 2012-10-23. You can still do a lot of stuff today with that cpu today and whats make you think it will stop working tomorrow or in 2 years.
just ask yourself this question. how many Iphone have you gone through? and how often do you upgrade it? each iphone is almost the price of your computer. it just that phone carrier make it seem like you don't have to pay for your phone but the fact is that you are paying it over time from your monthly phone bill. how future proof is that? 1 year? or 2?

and by the way. even tho nobody know whats DX12 is going to be like. but do take a look at this.
http://www.techpowerup.com/210960/amd-bets-on-directx-12-for-not-just-gpus-but-also-its-cpus.html
talks about DX12 and AMD

keep one thing in mind tho. AMD have a history of let down on promise so until it come out come out. i don't put my money in it.
and i think thats why we have so many people who hate AMD. caz of all the promise they can't keep.

i5 K series kills the Xeon because of overclocking. You won't be able to push a Xeon much but you can generally get an extra 1Ghz out of an i5-K. With a big air cooler that is which aren't much money.
I run my i5 2500k at 4.5ghz and have run it at 4.9Ghz with a fairly significant power bump.
That a real factor to consider. More than 35% increase in speed is noticeable in FPS in gaming.

I use a FX8320 and I can edit 1080p videos in full resolution, I played far cry 4, crisis 3, wolfenstine NO, and call of duty AW on very high and ultra with no problems 60fps. It plays GTA V excellent I havnt checked the fps yet but its handling business and its matched with a MSI GTX 970... I honestly dont see a reason why I would need to pay more to get a better experience when my current situation is more then I can ask for. Upgrade path is an issue you say... well when I run into a game that makes my system studder and shut down the I'll think about it but hey I figure by that time it would be time to upgrade anyways but I dont see that happening in the next 24 months... I dont have intel so I dont know what its like but what I do know is my AMD machine is handling business...

Haswell just doesn't overclock as well as your Sandy. While 5GHz is pretty normal for a Sandy i5, a Haswell i5 is lucky to hit 4.3GHz. Those couple hundred MHz will not allow the i5 to conquer the Xeon. This is besides the fact that you can use a cheap mobo and stock cooler with the Xeon but need a good OC board and aftermarket cooler to overclock the Haswell i5 for a few hundred MHz... For that extra price, one could simply buy the higher clocked Xeon model.

Try recording a gameplay video of Far Cry 4 with ultra settings at full quality on your i5. It will choke as every core will be at 100%.

Definitely agree. Recording games is where it really does help to have more logical cores, even if they are a little bit slower. I've tested this numerous times and the fast quads just choke, despite being fast for regular gameplay,

Ill mostly be using it for college, programming, office, and some light games, usually, i dont spend much on games, I play league of legends and dota 2 mostly, and these aren't graphically intense, that's what i mean by future proofing, if i only play these games, and just compile code, then ill be good right? For a couple of years? Then, Later down the road, ill upgrade.

do you have a laptop yet?
if not Intel ill be your pick for laptop. and from the look of it. it going to be next semester? They always have back to school sale that you can get in the summer.
sometime if timing is right. you maybe able to pick up a Intel i5 with a alright video card in it for about 800 buk. "I picked up an Acer i5 with AMD HD6850M like 3 years ago for 700?800? buk from back to school deal time"
If you are thinking desktop. it doesn't matter that much. since coding, ms words doesn't need all that power.
and for games like dota2 and LoL. both cpu will do alright. but you will need a video card no matter what. unless you are getting the A10 which I don't have first hand experience myself. "was going to get one but end up getting the Fx8350 myself"

Yes for both cpu you will be alright for a few years if that is all you do.
and in your case I would get a extra set of monitor too if it for coding.
once you used 2 screen for coding you won't want to go back. same thing go for 3rd monitor too LOL.
