Since I've started using Windows 8.1, I've noticed that Chrome freezing causes significantly longer (around 2 minutes) hangs for the entire PC than I've previously experienced on Windows 7. I've updated all drivers and BIOS to their latest versions.

Is there any way to stop Chrome from freezing, as well as freezing my entire PC?

Do you have any extensions/add-ons installed on Google chrome?

Try clearing the Browser's history, cookies etc.
Before doing so check that you do not have any stored website passwords, which you do not remember. If so, retrieve them, then clear the History, cookies etc.

Does the computer freeze when using Google chrome only? Does it freeze on any particular websites (which could use Adobe Flash, Air or Shockwave Player?

Try updating Google Chrome to the latest version.

If none of the above helps, uninstall Google Chrome, perform a Disk Cleanup, reboot and re-install it again.

If the issue persists, try replacing the SATA data and power cables, run a checkdisk, and a Hard disk test by a third part software. I usually use HDD...

If the issue persists, try replacing the SATA data and power cables, run a checkdisk, and a Hard disk test by a third part software. I usually use HDD Regenerator when I suspect that Hard Disk issues might be in play.

Do you perform regular preventive maintenance (cleaning inside the case and fans, and replacing the CPU thermal paste on the computer system?

Usually when a computer system, is slowing down, or hangs for several minutes, I check for any unwanted software or add-ons, if that does not help, I test the Hard Disk, because it could be failing.

Also go to Windows event viewer, and see if it displays any Warnings and/or errors.
