My friend is getting a MSI GTX 970. I have a MSI GTX 760 OCed edition. I know that his future GPU is much more powerful than mine is. What is recommended OC for my card? And can I bring my GPU a little closer to GTX 970?

Solution

Unfortunately the stock 970 will crush an overclocked 760. That's ok though. The 760 is still really good.

If you want to know how much to overclock it is best for you to try and find out. Typically you raise the power limit by 10% first. Then increase the Clock speed by +10MHz increments until failure in a stress test. Then return it to stock and repeat with Memory. Once you find those settings, then apply both and stress test it. If it fails then back them both down a bit, more so the Memory cuz not as beneficial as clock speed. If you want to overclock it can vary so you should try yourself using something...
This depends very much on the exact sample of your card. No two cards are equal, and you can only find out for yourself by testing. Note that this card is already factory OC-ed slightly by the manufacturer. I would not hold my breath on any crazy OCs here, maybe a few dozen MHz on the GPU side, which is a very slight difference in practice and probably not worth bothering.

Only a few dozen? Maybe I'm just lucky and got the better gpu....
here are my overclock results on my evga gtx 760 4gb.:
core: +190mhz
memory: +208mhz
power target: 112%
The temps go up to about 78-80C after about 20 mins of msi kombuster stress test (gpu core burner furry msi) with no stutters.
At about +230mhz core clock the gpu will crash after about 5 mins even on 115% power target.
