Best 970 model/brand for SLI?

Solution

The G1 is the best cooled and OC card, but it's the longest and most costly. See my above comment about the size though.

you want a gtx 970 with a reference design cooler, they blow out the hot air at the back of the card while most, if not all, aother coolers dump the air inside of the case. you can however place an exhaust fan next to the GPU's if you rather have MSI or asus cards or whatsoever

Simple in terms of specs, the EVGA or Gigabyte G1 cards are the best. Without any other components listed, it's impossible to make any other recommendations.

terms of specs? MSI cards are better for overclocking than the EVGA card(s) to start with, the cooling for example is better aswell.

like I said before, each card has pro's and cons. so they are all the best in a way.

with those specs I'm afraid 2 gigabyte cards might not fit in there. you should measure the distance from the slot to the drivebay and see how long it is and see which cards may or may not fit and make a selection from there. then you need to see what you prioritise, overclockability, silence, keeping the card as cool as possible, out of the box performance

you may be better off with a single 980 and adding another 980 later, or getitng 2 980's at once due to the slower 512MB VRAM partition on GTX 970 cards. it might cause some performance loss when you use over 3.5gigs ov VRAM, which will happen on 4k resolution

I am pretty sure they will fit, PC part picker says so and I've had a look the two hard drives are much lower than the pci slots. Based on the gpu benchmarks it doesnt seem the slower 512 MB has almost any impact, do u know of any evidence that that the slower 512MB has caused noticeable performance loss?

the best option then is going for 2 gigabyte cards, they have the highest out of the box overclock and the best, but loudest cooling.

and about the performance loss, after going over 3.5 gigs people are reporting some spikes, I dont have actual proof of it, I'm just throwing it out there.

Must have missed that. Definitely possible you will see some slow downs in intense games. The SLI 970s will help with that, but honestly 6GB cards should be used for 4k anyway... The 980 Ti's are on their way.

I prefer not to pay the premium for newly released cards, and is the extra vram really useful considering the processing speed of current cards?

Until the next architecture, 6GB of ram is the best for 4k. Also, the G1 970's are only $10 less than their released price on most sites, and they are still premium compared to others.
