Planning an upgrade from a 2500K oced to 4.4ghz on air. Do I upgrade now to a 4960k or wait for Skylake? Mainly a gaming rig with occasional encoding and daily light business work.

I prefer a rig that will last me 3+ years.

Thanks

Your 2500k at 4.4 GHz already beats stock 4690k. You need a 4690k at 4 GHz to get over it. Devil's Canyon will be more of a side grade than an upgrade. The 10-15% are easily offset by the ability to achieve a higher clock easier and with less noise.

Either an i5-4690 / i7-4790/k now or a Skylake later should easily give you 3+ years. Personally, if I were you, if you can hold out wait for Skylake CPUs to be released to see how much better they benchmark and what the cost differential will be. Also note that if you plan to overclock, it's being said that the first Skylake CPUs will not have a K series and won't until sometime in 2016, so also something to consider.
