Im aware of extra heat, im asking more about the electronic side?

damn but okay well you might be able to just check to make sure the socket is compatible and the wattage is the is at a reasonable number which should be but for now thats all I can do

check the socket? well ok. they are both socket 775.

as fas as the wattage, well they are both rated as a 95w chip.

but here's the catch, will his chipset recognize this new chip?
possibly, but if i recall there wasn't many chipset that worked with both cpu's.

Sorry no, anything that a pentium d will work in, a core2quad will not work in, i had the same situation with an old pc that i wanted to keep running. The changes between the two processors is to great for them to work on the same chipset despite the socket being the same.

^ correct.

You guys need to check your facts before answering questions. I have a dell dimension e520 which had some crappy Pentium D in it. After doing some reading in the dell forums, I bought a cheap q6600 off of ebay and installed it. Now the computer is MUCH faster and runs perfectly. Moral of the story: don't say things you don't know.

I need to know what system/motherboard your using before I determine a compatible cpu.

thanks for all the responses

the Q8400 was taken from a Dell Optiplex 780 small form factor
the Pentium D 945 (not 100% sure thats the right number) is in a Dell Optiplex 745 ultra small form factor.
here are the chipsets:
745- Intel® Q965 (ICH8) Express Chipset
780- Intel® Q45 Express Chipset w/ICH10DO

Sadly, you have the only form factor of the optiplex 745 that does not support quads. The 745 mt, dt, and sff all support the q6600 and q6700 (not the wolfdale or yorkfield 45nm chips like your q8400). The usff uses a different chipset and probably can't supply enough power for the quads anyway.

I already own the Q8400 from a pc that broke so I would like to make use of it,

it has an e8400 core2duo in it if that can give any idea of its compatibility with q8400?

It seems the E8400 is a farily decent CPU to begin with anyway,
Im just glad I came here before i bought the other one,
:) thanks for the guidance
