Adding RAM - Question about timings

Hi all,

I just added a matching pair of 2GB DIMMs to my system for a total of 8GB (4x2GB).

I ran into an issue where only half the RAM was being detected at POST. After a few hours of troubleshooting, I believe the problem is related to memory timings in BIOS.

Before adding the RAM, the timings were set to what the memory is rated at, which is 7-8-7-24. But after the upgrade, when I try to change these values from 'Auto' (which is 9-9-9-24), only 4GB is detected. The system runs fine with the timings on Auto.

Questions:
1. Is there a relationship between the number of DIMM slots used and memory timings?
2. Realistically, how much of a performance hit would I be getting with the higher timings?
3. Is there a BIOS setting that I'm missing that would allow me to run at the rated values?

System Specs:
P55A-UD4P (LGA 1156, Gigabyte)
i7 860 (minor OC @ 3.36GHz)
8GB DDR3 1600 1.6V G.Skill Ripjaws, 7-8-7-24 (4x2GB)

Thanks in advance!

Solution
All sticks the same? If so, leave the timings at spec and raise the DRAM voltage + 0.06 and the QPI/VTT voltage + 0.05 to start and se if it helps

Thanks for the reply.

Yes all 4 sticks are identical. When you say leave the timings at spec, you mean at 7-8-7-24?

So I set the QPI/VTT voltage setting to 'Auto' (it was set to normal) and the system is running stable with all 8GB and the correct timings. Oddly enough the cpu temps seem better now too.
