My games on my laptop are starting to have lag spikes every few seconds. Games like L.A Noire, Far Cry 3, GTA IV would run great at High settings now they lag and have lag spikes, even at the lowest settings. Although, it's smoother at low settings but still has the lag spikes. I've owned this laptop since July 2014.

Intel Core i7-4510U
8GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce GT 840M 2GB
1TB HDD
Windows 8.1

Solution
Check your CPU usage during games, from what your saying here it sounds like your pushing your Processor to the limit.

If your Processor frequently goes to 100% usage, then it causes lag spikes.

Hi there redwoodoriginal,

Go to Resource Monitor and see whether there is something abnormal such as high HDD, CPU, etc. usage.
Some things you can try are:
- Measure the temps of your laptop. Amassed dust could be blocking the airflow and thus result in increased temperature.
- Test your HDD with a brand specific testing tool.
- Update your GPU drivers.
- Test your RAM. Check this out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-1906201/test-memory-memtest.html

I think this is a hdd issue as the games you are playing are gpu intensive games rather than cpu. But I would still check the cpu and hdd usage while playing these games.

Most likely the hdd has been fragmented and needs to be defragmented. The other reason I can think of is that you have too many programs that are not needed which are running or you have a lot of personal data on your hdd which is slowing down the read speeds of the game.

Let me know what you find out.
