Need some help with my home networking set up. We just switched over to Centurylink DSL. We have the modem installed in our upstairs office in order to keep the wireless point upstairs. Our house is prewired for Ethernet with the wiring closet in the basement. I would like to use the wired capabilities for our directtv receivers if possible. The technician suggested we could run the Ethernet cable from the modem to the wall port and then pick up that cable into in the basement to redistribute the signal through the house wiring. Are there any downsides to this? I also have our old Linksys 3200 wireless router downstairs as well as a netgear 5port switch (GS605). Should I use the switch for this? Can I also add the Linksys upstairs as an additional wireless point (does this improve speed at all? Sorry for the lengthy question....

There aren't any downsides to starting upstairs, using ethernet cable to run to the basement where a switch connects the other ethernet cables back to the router. A switch is the right hardware for use in the basement.

You could use the linksys as an access point. Roaming between the two WIFI sources probably won't be seamless. I don't recommend using the same SSID for multiple APs if they aren't intended to work as a system.
